Zibreira: Hiking, Caves and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Zibreira
Three themes stand out when planning a trip to Zibreira: the PR1 Rota do Almonda, archaeological evidence from different periods, and the Igreja de São Sebastião with its sacred art. The PR1 is a 23 km linear hiking trail. The Grutas do Almonda cannot be visited because of their complex accessibility. Ciência Viva’s 2026 visitor program at Renova also includes a visit to the Caminho beside the source of the Almonda. Check the date and availability. These offer distinct reasons to visit: a hiking route, a cave landscape, and a visit that is part of a program.
Hiking the PR1 Rota do Almonda
The PR1 Rota do Almonda is a 23 km linear hiking trail. It connects the Parque Natural das Serras de Aire e Candeeiros with the Reserva Natural do Paul do Boquilobo. Two specific features help define it: its length and the connection between the two protected areas. If hiking is the focus of your stay, the PR1 is a clearly defined point of reference. Its linear format sets it apart from Zibreira’s individual archaeological and religious sites. The route can therefore be considered a hiking focus in its own right, while the other attractions raise questions about archaeological finds and sacred art.
Cave landscape and archaeological periods
The Grutas do Almonda extend for more than 15 km. They cannot be visited because of their complex accessibility. This restriction is the key consideration when planning your trip: the Grutas should not be planned as a destination for a cave tour.
Archaeological materials were found at Entrance 1 of the Gruta da Nascente do Almonda, near the source of the Almonda in the municipality of Zibreira. They date from the Middle and Upper Paleolithic through to Roman times. Here, the interest lies in the long archaeological period represented at the Almonda; the PR1 route offers a different focus, with its length and connection between two protected areas taking center stage.
The Lapa da Bugalheira is classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público. It was used in the Neolithic and reused in the Chalcolithic. This presents two distinct archaeological timelines: the materials at Entrance 1 of the Gruta da Nascente date back to Roman times, while the sequence at the Lapa is marked by its initial use and later reuse.
Church art and history
At the Igreja de São Sebastião, attention turns to a specific artistic detail: the main altarpiece features richly decorated gilded woodcarving. In 1902, several objects from the former Mosteiro de Santa Clara de Santarém were transferred to the Igreja. These details describe different aspects of the church: the decoration of the main altarpiece and a historical transfer. For travelers interested in culture, this provides a third theme alongside cave archaeology and the hiking route, one specifically associated with the Igreja de São Sebastião.
