Torres Novas: Culture, Museums and Walking Trails
Accommodation in Torres Novas
Castelo de Torres Novas is classified as a National Monument. A footpath runs around its walls, and the towers offer views of the Serra de Aire and the surrounding town. In 1190, D. Sancho I captured the castle; it is considered a symbol of the town’s political importance in the Middle Ages. Here, a specific place, its history and views of the landscape come together.
Museums and Industrial History
Núcleo Museológico Cerca da Vila is in the historic centre next to the castle and is part of the town’s cultural route. Its permanent exhibition traces the history of human settlement in the area that is now the town, following the Almonda River from prehistoric times to the end of the Middle Ages. It also displays a 400,000-year-old human fossil skull from Gruta da Aroeira. As exhibitions may change, it is advisable to check the current display before your visit.
Museu Municipal Carlos Reis is housed in Casa do Mogo de Melo, also known as Casa do Mogo. The imposing house dates from the 18th century, and an old chapel stands at one end of its long façade. The building is classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Concelhio. At the museum, you can see paintings by Carlos Reis, sacred art and archaeological exhibitions on local history, spanning prehistory, Romanisation and the Middle Ages. Art and different periods of local history are presented side by side.
The museum centre at Central do Caldeirão offers another chapter in the town’s history. It is housed in a former hydroelectric power station that generated and distributed electricity in Torres Novas from 1922/23 to 1984. The centre opened in 2023, alongside the restoration and heritage enhancement of the Caldeirão mill and olive-oil press. Its industrial archaeology collection preserves memories of the workers’ settlement in Torres Novas. The history of energy and the heritage of the workers’ settlement are thus two aspects of this site.
Churches and Architecture
The MisericĂłrdia of Torres Novas was founded in 1534. Igreja da MisericĂłrdia features a Renaissance portal, a 17th-century ceiling, carved altarpieces and 17th-century tile decoration. The church is classified as an ImĂłvel de Interesse PĂşblico. Igreja de SĂŁo Pedro has a different spatial layout: its interior consists of three naves, and the main chapel is lined with polychrome 17th-century tiles. Visitors interested in historic interiors will find two distinct architectural experiences here.
Hiking and Time by the Almonda
The walking trails differ in their route, length and destination. PR1 TNV – Rota do Almonda is a 23-kilometre linear trail along the Almonda River. It connects Parque Natural das Serras de Aire e Candeeiros with Reserva Natural do Paul do Boquilobo and also includes a section through the town. By contrast, PR2 TNV – Rota dos Vales da Serra is a 13-kilometre circular trail that reaches the summit of the Serra de Aire. Its route features densely vegetated valleys and deeply cut paths. The two trails thus offer a choice between a longer linear riverside route with a section through town and a shorter circular route leading to a summit.
Jardim da Avenida offers a different perspective on the Almonda: this riverside garden is characterised by dense leafy trees and climbing plants; it also has terraces and swings. It is intended for both local residents and visitors. Sport also has its place: the Piscinas Municipais Fernando Cunha complex can host major competitions in swimming, water polo, synchronised swimming and diving.
When looking for a hotel in Torres Novas, you can start by deciding what you want to focus on during your stay: museums and churches, a hike or the riverside landscape along the Almonda. The sites and trails offer different themes and points of interest to help you plan your trip.
