When choosing a hotel in Lufrei, you can consider whether you mainly want to go hiking, discover religious heritage or learn about the area’s long history of settlement. These interests can be explored at different places and along different routes: the Rota do Marancinho (PR1) passes through Lufrei, while the Igreja do Salvador de Lufrei and the Capela do Divino Salvador offer their own religious connections. There are also historic road routes and archaeological evidence.

Hiking Trails and Navigation

The Rota do Marancinho (PR1) is a six-kilometre hiking trail that passes through Lufrei. One section follows an old Roman road, and a large part of the route runs along the stream of the same name. This combines a historic road connection with the stream as a landscape feature on the same hiking route.

The old path to the Capela da Quinta is for pedestrians only and connects the street of the same name with Rua de Frariz. As the condition of the path may change, check it before your visit. Barriers prevent motorised traffic on the Caminho da Capela da Quinta.

Churches and Route Connections

The Igreja do Salvador de Lufrei lies along the Caminhos de Santiago and has been part of the Rota do Românico since 2010. It is believed to have been founded in the 12th century, at the time the Benedictine monastery of Salvador de Lufrei was established. From Amarante, you can reach the church via the N15 towards Mesão Frio/Régua; then follow the signs to the church.

The distinction is practical: the PR1 is a six-kilometre hiking trail, while the Igreja do Salvador is connected to the Caminhos de Santiago and the Rota do Românico. You can therefore plan your time around either a hike or the history of religious routes.

A report from March 2025 describes the Capela do Divino Salvador as a significant example of Lufrei’s religious heritage. It notes a handrail on the steepest section of the footpath, as well as a rest area with two stone benches. Check the current condition of the path and its facilities before your visit.

Early Settlement and Culture

Human settlement in Lufrei dates back to the Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods. During Roman times, a settlement stood near the former Via do Marão, possibly a villa or a vicus. A 2022 article describes a Roman road that crossed Lufrei and connected Tongobriga (Freixo in the municipality of Marco de Canaveses) with Panoias (Vila Real); some sections were still preserved at the time. A 2022 article mentions the Necropolis of Gatiães as archaeological heritage in Lufrei.

Local tradition includes the Bombos “Amigos da Borga” drum group, the only traditional group of its kind in the Freguesia of Lufrei. It regularly performs at the June festivities in Amarante. As event programmes may change, check the latest dates in advance.
