Accommodation in Candemil
If you’re looking for a hotel in Candemil, your stay may be shaped by different interests: the fishing waters of the Rio Marão and Ribeira de Murgido, the preserved village of Murgido, archaeological heritage and major summer celebrations. These themes represent different sides of the destination. For planning, it helps to distinguish between them: fishing is limited to a designated stretch and season, while village features, archaeological heritage and festivals highlight other aspects of the destination. This can help you decide what you’d like to focus your trip on.
Fishing on the Rio Marão and Ribeira de Murgido
The fishing concession on the Rio Marão and Ribeira de Murgido extends for 5.4 kilometres across the municipalities of Candemil and Ansiães in the municipality of Amarante.
According to an ICNF notice dated 13 February 2026, the 2026 fishing season ran from 1 March to 31 July. For that season, anglers needed a valid recreational or non-resident fishing licence for the municipality of Amarante, as well as a separate daily licence for the concession. The two licences cover different areas: the first applies to the municipality of Amarante, while the second applies specifically to the concession. A maximum of 38 anglers per day were allowed to fish in the concession. The season and licence conditions stated here apply to 2026.
Murgido: village and architecture
A preserved village in the Serra do Marão, Murgido is part of the municipality of Candemil. Its buildings of slate and granite have been preserved. A municipal description updated in May 2025 also mentions a mill there that is still in operation.
Summer celebrations and archaeological heritage
A 2020 report describes Candemil’s major summer celebrations as alternating between the municipal seat, with the celebration of Saint Christopher, and Murgido, with the celebration of Our Lady of Remedies (Nossa Senhora dos Remédios). If a summer festival is important to your trip, check the date for the relevant year.
A municipal notice dated 7 April 2026 lists Furnas de Candemil as inventoried archaeological heritage of the municipality of Amarante. Murgido and Furnas de Candemil therefore represent different cultural highlights: a preserved village with slate and granite buildings on the one hand, and archaeological heritage on the other.
Rio Marão and Parque de Merendas
The Rio Marão offers a chance to cool off. Visitors can relax at the Parque de Merendas de Candemil de Amarante. The river and park offer different ways to spend time outdoors.
The public transport connection “Rodo Amarante – E1 Póvoa – Amarante (Terminal)” is listed for the Parque de Merendas de Candemil de Amarante. If you’re planning to travel by public transport, check the current service frequency in advance.
