Santo Amaro, in the Portuguese municipality of Sousel, lies in an Alentejo landscape on the right bank of the Ribeiro do Lupe. For a hotel stay, the parish church, local festival traditions and a recreational fishing area are useful points of reference. Check opening times and conditions for your travel dates; facts about the town do not guarantee that a hotel room is available.

Santo Amaro at a glance

  • The parish church was built in the 15th century and reconstructed in the 20th century.
  • A marble Cruzeiro stands in the square opposite the church.
  • The Bênção do Gado is an old local tradition involving the blessing of livestock.
  • The Feira Franca is listed for the second weekend in March.
  • The Albufeira da Madalena has a 41-hectare water surface designated for recreational fishing.

The church and townscape

The Igreja Paroquial de Santo Amaro stands at the entrance to the settlement. Its origins in the 15th century and its reconstruction in the 20th century are separate building phases. Visitors interested in architecture should not reduce this history to a single, unchanged medieval building. The marble Cruzeiro de Santo Amaro stands in a small square opposite. Check current information for access to the interior and religious services.

Festival traditions and local cuisine

During the Bênção do Gado, a procession passes through the main streets towards the fields, where the village priest blesses the livestock. The tradition is one of the oldest in the village. Regional products are also highlighted, especially Bolo Branco, regarded as a culinary icon of the freguesia. This does not guarantee that a particular pastry will be available at all times.

A festival calendar lists the Feira Franca on the second weekend in March and the celebration in honour of Nossa Senhora do Rosário on the third weekend in August. The latter is described as featuring traditional largadas and garraiadas. Check dates and specific programme details with the municipality for the relevant year. Founded in 1986, the Rancho Folclórico e Cultural de Santo Amaro is dedicated to preserving local and Alentejo traditions; this does not mean that it performs daily.

Routes and recreational fishing

The Rota Literária de Sousel has a point of interest in Santo Amaro called “A minha escola em Santo Amaro” and another about the Bolo Branco from Pastelaria Maltês. These waypoints are themes on a literary route, not a guaranteed guided tour or tasting for every visitor.

The designated Albufeira da Madalena recreational fishing area has a water surface of 41 hectares. An official document lists special day licences at Herdade da Alvarinha for specific morning hours. Rules, issuing times and current conditions may change; confirm them before travelling. The water surface does not mean that use is free of charge.

Choose the right hotel

A location suitable for visiting the church may differ from one that suits a trip to the Albufeira. Compare the exact hotel address with your chosen destination, current transport routes, price and amenities. The overview for Sousel provides regional context.
