A hiking trail, sweeping views across the Alentejo plain and a diverse collection of depictions of Christ offer different perspectives on Sousel. There are also churches and other buildings dating back several centuries, a literary project and a traditional pilgrimage on Easter Monday. You can give nature, art and local history the emphasis that best suits your interests.

Landscape, Elevations and Hiking Trail

The landscape around Sousel includes cork oak stands, olive groves, vineyards and extensive farmland. The southern mountain ranges include São Bartolomeu at 374 metres, São Miguel at 391 metres and Caixeiro at 454 metres. Caixeiro is therefore the highest of the three named elevations; from the heights, you can look out across the Alentejo plain.

The Fantástica Serra de São Miguel is 10.6 kilometres long and takes about three hours to walk. It starts at the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Orada and follows rural paths through centuries-old olive groves. Along the way, the trail also gives you the opportunity to visit a lime kiln restored by the municipality. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

Art and Architectural History

The Museu dos Cristos brings together 1,486 depictions of Christ of different types, from various regions and periods. The collection includes pieces from Africa, the Indo-Portuguese world, the Holy Land and various parts of Europe. Six thematic sections organise the exhibition, while multimedia encourages interaction with visitors. The diverse origins of the pieces and the thematic layout offer different ways to engage with the museum.

The churches also reflect distinct periods and histories. The Igreja Nossa Senhora da Orada is part of Sousel's built heritage and is dated to the period from the 15th to the 18th century; it is also the starting point of the hiking trail. The Igreja do Convento de Santo António is located in the centre of Sousel. It was built in the 17th century when the monastery was founded; the monastery belonged to the religious order of the Hermits of Saint Paul. The Igreja Matriz de Sousel dates from the early 16th century, belongs to the commandery of the Order of Avis and has been classified as a monument of public interest since 2010.

The Torre de Camões, also known as the Torre do Álamo, is believed to have originally been a defensive watchtower built between the late 15th and early 16th centuries. It has been classified as heritage of municipal interest since 2016. The remains of an aqueduct and a basin are located a few metres away. The Praça de Touros Pedro Louceiro is considered one of Portugal's oldest bullrings and possibly the oldest on the Iberian Peninsula. The Pelourinho is thought to date from the 16th century; its reconstruction is attributed to the 20th century.

Literature and Local Traditions

The Rota Literária de Sousel is a project that invites visitors to discover places through stories, cultural routes and literary experiences. Another local tradition is the Romaria de Nossa Senhora do Carmo da Serra de São Miguel, which has been held for centuries. It takes place on Easter Monday and has a strong traditional community character. If you would like to plan your trip around this date, take Easter Monday into account when making your plans.

One local product also reflects the region: Bolo Branco originated in the municipality of Santo Amaro, in the Sousel area. When looking for a hotel in Sousel, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on during your stay. The hike takes about three hours and makes for a clearly defined activity; the museum and buildings offer a different emphasis. This way, you can balance nature, art and history according to your interests.
