Fronteira: Battle History and Architecture
Accommodation in Fronteira
Fronteira can be explored through several very different themes: the Battle of Atoleiros, religious and military architecture, and the landscape along the Ribeira Grande. This variety can help you plan your stay: the places below differ in their historical periods and in whether architecture, views or landscape take centre stage. Fronteira lies on the left bank of the Avis River.
The Battle of Atoleiros through different media
The Battle of Atoleiros took place on 6 April 1384. The Centro de Interpretação da Batalha de Atoleiros uses an audio guide, complemented by stage design, films, audiovisual content and multimedia. The centre has four visitor areas: O Atelier do Pintor, O Panorama da Batalha de Atoleiros, A Câmara Obscura and O Laboratório de Fotografia. This places not only the historical date but also the way the story is presented at the centre: the subject is explored through audio, visual design and multimedia, while the four named areas provide a clear structure.
Buildings bearing traces of different periods
The Arco dos Santos is a pointed arch dating from the 14th century and marked one of the former entrances to Fronteira’s fortified centre. The Pelourinho de Fronteira was erected after King D. Manuel granted the town a charter in 1512. These two structures illustrate different aspects of the town’s history: the former fortified entrance and the period following the granting of the charter. The Terreiro da Batalha de Atoleiros has been classified as a National Monument since 2023.
The Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Atalaia was built in the 16th century at the behest of King D. Sebastião and completed in 1599. Its three vaulted naves have five bays and are all the same height. The naves are the longitudinal sections of the interior; the bays further divide the church space. This makes the architectural features tangible not only through the building’s date but also through its interior structure. The Igreja da Misericórdia was completed in 1583 and displays decorative and architectural features of the Baroque.
The former Casas da Câmara of Fronteira are also part of the town’s architectural history; they were probably built in the 16th century. A square granite tower in Fronteira reaches a height of 24 metres. The different dates and building forms give you several points of reference for understanding the town’s historic architecture.
Historic centre and views in Cabeço de Vide
The Centro Histórico de Cabeço de Vide brings together the former town hall, clock tower, pillory, old prison, parish church and fortress in an almost perfect circle. The layout is as distinctive as the individual buildings: it presents the historic centre as a unified ensemble. The Largo da Cadeia, also called Largo do Pelourinho, offers a different perspective. From there, expansive views stretch south and west across a broad horizon. In Cabeço de Vide, then, the spatial arrangement of the historic centre and the open, far-reaching views offer contrasting impressions.
Granite bridge and seasonal swimming pools
At the Centro EcoturĂstico da Ribeira Grande, there is a granite bridge with ten semicircular arches. The site also contains significant areas of biodiversity. During the summer months, the outdoor municipal swimming pools add to the Centro. If you take these offerings into account when planning your stay, the seasonal nature of the swimming pools is the key difference from the landscape features that are present year-round.
The transformation of former infrastructure is also part of the town’s history: the municipality converted the former railway track in Fronteira into the Ecopista Atoleiros–Sulfúrea. The Termas da Sulfúrea was established as a thermal spa in 1855. The topics mentioned here therefore span from medieval buildings to the precisely dated origins of a thermal spa in the 19th century.
