Alter do Chão can be explored through a variety of themes: horse breeding, landscapes and hiking trails, archaeological traces, architectural history and regional cuisine. You can shape your stay around the experiences that interest you most.

Stud Farm, Horse Breeding and Landscapes

The Coudelaria de Alter was founded in 1748 by D. João V to breed Lusitano horses for the Picaria Real. It is considered the oldest stud farm in the world to have operated continuously in the same place. Its founding purpose and long history of continuous operation tell two different aspects of its story.

Possible activities at the Coudelaria de Alter include introductory riding sessions, carriage rides, horseback riding, vaulting lessons and riding lessons; confirm practical availability before travelling. This lets you plan your visit according to your interest in horses and riding activities.

The Tapada do Arneiro covers about 800 hectares. Its character includes landscape, floral and fauna values, as well as archaeological and historical-cultural routes. Nature and history offer different ways of seeing the grounds.

Routes Between the Riverbank and a Camino Stage

The 10.5-kilometre ALT PR1 hiking route, “Olhar sobre a ribeira”, runs along the Ribeira de Seda in Alter do Chão. It passes through riverside woodland and continues to the Ponte Romana de Vila Formosa, one of the rural monuments in the Alter do Chão area. Check the route conditions before setting out.

A different distance is given for Stage 15 of the Caminhos de Santiago: it is 14.4 kilometres long and runs from Cabeço de Vide to Alter do Chão. Comparing it with ALT PR1 shows two different route lengths and descriptions; the Caminhos stage has clearly named start and end points. Conditions on this route can also change, so it is worth checking before planning.

Archaeological Traces and Architectural History

On the hill of Alter Pedroso are the remains of a medieval castle, along with evidence of settlements from the Iron Age and the later Roman period. The Estação arqueológica de Alter do Chão includes a building with mosaics and baths; the remains may have belonged to Abelterium. This cautious attribution to Abelterium remains a possibility, not a certainty.

The Castelo de Alter do Chão is a fortified structure with a square ground plan, high battlemented walls, cylindrical towers and Gothic portals. Its square keep is about 44 metres high. The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Alegria adds to this architectural history: it was built at the end of the 16th century and rebuilt in the following century. Its architecture brings together Renaissance, Mannerist, Baroque and Rococo styles.

The Igreja de São Francisco offers another architectural contrast. Its façade is Mannerist; the simple interior displays 17th-century and Mannerist features. The main chapel contains gilded carved woodwork. Exploring these buildings reveals different forms and periods, without reducing either church to a single style.

Saffron and Regional Cuisine

The Semana Gastronómica do Açafrão takes place annually and puts saffron in the spotlight. As dates may vary, check the event dates if you would like to plan your trip around the festival. The saffron tradition also features in a regional dish: Açafrão-bastardo is the basis for Arroz Amarelo, which is served with ensopado de borrego.

Practical Information

Alter do Chão has a Rede Expressos bus stop. Check the timetable before travelling. The ground floor of Casa do Álamo houses the tourist office and spaces for temporary exhibitions; the library is on the upper floor. Confirm the institutions’ functions locally if needed.

Your stay can therefore include a range of different interests: horse breeding and riding activities, hikes, archaeological sites and churches, or the saffron tradition. If you are looking for a hotel in Alter do Chão, these interests can help you decide what you would like to experience during your trip.
