Access to Cascata dos Anjos in Ponta do Sol is prohibited by the authorities for safety reasons; a visit is not recommended. Coastal scenery and bathing conditions sit alongside architecture, literature and the history of Madeira’s banana industry. With its length and stated difficulty level, the hiking trail offers a concrete way to assess how much hiking to include in your trip.

Pebble Cove and Views

Praia da Ponta do Sol lies in a small bay within the town, between protective valley slopes. The small pebble beach is about 160 metres long in total. The beach is known for its clear, mild bathing waters; actual bathing conditions may vary. Alongside views of the mountains and sea, there is a stretch of coast whose beach material and approximate length can be factored into your plans.

Facilities at Praia include changing rooms, accessible sanitary facilities, a bar, a play area and a summer library. As the operation of individual facilities may change, check the current availability of services before your visit. The summer library is a distinctive feature of the beach.

At Miradouro Sobranceiro à Ponta do Sol, concrete benches provide a place to rest and take in the surroundings. From there, you can see the green mountains that encircle the town and the deep-blue, crystal-clear sea. The viewpoint offers a different landscape from the sheltered cove: here, the focus is on the panorama and a pause to rest.

Architecture and History

Cais da Ponta do Sol was inaugurated on 9 September 1849. A broad rounded arch connects the coastal cliff to the pier; the structure was built from local basalt, dressed stone and rounded stones. An old prison carved into the rock and the guardhouse can also be seen at the entrance. Its construction, materials and the two features at the entrance give the pier a multifaceted architectural character.

Palacete do Lugar de Baixo, also known as Palacete dos Zinos, and its adjoining chapel are also part of the municipality’s architectural history. Both were built in the late 19th century and are located in the municipality of Ponta do Sol. The chapel is dedicated to Saint Anthony, and the palacete features a Romantic style. Together, the buildings reflect a specific period of construction, a named architectural style and a religious dedication.

Cultural Venues and Things to See

Centro Cultural John dos Passos is located in the centre of Ponta do Sol. It is dedicated to the writer John dos Passos, as well as to the municipality’s artists and collectors. The centre includes a permanent exhibition about the writer’s life and work, two museum spaces, a library, rooms for temporary exhibitions and an auditorium. An annual symposium dedicated to the author is held there. If you are planning to attend on a specific date, check the current programme.

Film screenings also continue to be held at Cine Sol in collaboration with various organisations and cinema projects. The programme may change. Film, literature and visual art offer different cultural points of interest in Ponta do Sol: Centro Cultural focuses on an author and the municipality’s arts scene, while the cinema hosts film screenings.

BAM – Museu da Banana da Madeira is located in Lugar de Baixo, in the municipality of Ponta do Sol. It tells the story of bananas in Madeira, their transportation processes and their importance to the island’s economic development. A visit also includes experimental banana plantations and technologically equipped greenhouses where you can observe the cultivation process. As visitor arrangements may change, it is advisable to check the current visiting options before making plans.

Nature and Hiking

Lagoa do Lugar de Baixo is used by many migratory bird species as a resting or nesting place. This offers a different perspective on the municipality’s natural attractions than the coastal cove or the panorama from the viewpoint: here, the focus is on the lagoon’s importance to migratory birds, without promising that any particular species can be observed.

The Lombada da Ponta do Sol circular hiking trail is 7.8 kilometres long and has a moderate difficulty level. It starts and ends at the same place, Sítio da Lombada, north of the town. The information about length and difficulty helps you assess how much hiking to include in your trip; check trail conditions before setting out. In contrast to the lagoon, the hike focuses on distance and difficulty, while the lagoon offers a different nature experience as a resting or nesting place for migratory birds.
