A small bay, black sand beaches and historic architecture reveal different sides of Ponta do Sol. There are also opportunities to observe nature at Lagoa do Lugar de Baixo and visit cultural sites with stories of their own. The experiences you choose to focus on can also guide your plans for your stay.

Beaches and paths by the sea

Praia da Ponta do Sol is a small pebble beach in a small bay in the town, about 160 metres long. It has changing rooms and toilets adapted for people with reduced mobility, and parking is available nearby. If these facilities are important to your plans, check the current situation before your visit.

The beaches also differ in their surfaces: Praia dos Anjos has basalt pebbles and black sand, while Praia da Madalena do Mar combines rounded pebbles with black sand. You can reach Praia dos Anjos via Caminho dos Anjos and a wooden staircase. Praia da Madalena do Mar is accessible via two ramps, and its promenade is well suited to walks by the sea. These beaches offer different coastal scenery and access routes, without promising the same kind of beach visit.

Cultural sites and architectural history

Centro Cultural John Dos Passos has a permanent exhibition on John Dos Passos. The centre also includes two museum areas, a storage room, the Dra. Carmo da Cunha Santos Library and an auditorium for various cultural activities. It hosts an annual conference on John Dos Passos, emigration and culture. As the programme may change, it is advisable to check the dates before visiting.

Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Luz was built in the late 15th century and displays typical features of Manueline and Neo-Mannerist religious architecture. Green ceramic tiles adorn the church; they are believed to have come from Seville and are considered unique in Portugal. Capela de São Sebastião has a different architectural style: it was built in 1597 as a small place of worship dedicated to Saint Sebastian. Its simple, longitudinal layout is combined with Mannerist religious architecture. The chapel offers a view over the town of Ponta do Sol.

Palacete do Lugar de Baixo adds a later historical note. Its main building and the adjoining Chapel of Saint Anthony were built in the late 19th century; the palacete is designed in the Romantic style. From the building, you can see the marina and Lagoa do Lugar de Baixo. Museu da Banana da Madeira – BAM – explores the history of the banana and its importance to Madeira’s economic development. A visit also includes experimental banana-growing areas with innovative banana plant transport systems, as well as greenhouses with modern technology. The bar serves banana beer and banana chips; if you have specific plans, check what is currently on offer.

Lagoon, plant life and views

Lagoa do Lugar de Baixo is the only tidal lagoon in the Madeira archipelago. It serves as a resting and nesting place for migratory birds and is used for birdwatching. Those interested in birdlife will find a distinct connection with nature here, setting it apart from the coastal and cultural attractions.

Paul da Serra is the largest mountain plateau in the Madeira archipelago. It is home to native vegetation and endemic plant species of the island, as well as significant fauna, particularly bird species. Bica da Cana offers a different perspective on the mountains: from there, the panorama stretches across Madeira’s mountain peaks and the São Vicente valley. Bica da Cana has fire pits, tables, benches and toilets. As visitor facilities may change, check their current availability if needed.

Viewpoints also differ in what they show: Miradouro Sobranceiro à Ponta do Sol offers a view over the Ponta do Sol valley, with benches where you can rest and take in the surroundings. Miradouro do Cascalho is accessible via Estrada Regional 222. Before driving there, it is worth checking the current road conditions.

Circular walk and planning your stay

The Lombada da Ponta do Sol trail is a circular route: it starts and ends at the same place, Sítio da Lombada. Along the way, participants encounter two levadas, Levada do Moinho and Levada Nova. As route information may change, check the latest details before setting out on a hike.

When choosing a hotel, you can start by considering which of these experiences you want to shape your stay: time by the sea, cultural visits, birdwatching or a circular walk. Then base your search for accommodation on your specific plans, and check how its location fits with the destinations you have chosen.
