Bay, Beach and Coastal Paths

The Promenade de Câmara de Lobos is a 2.2-kilometre-long coastal path for pedestrians. It runs between the Ponta da Cruz area and the bay of Câmara de Lobos, passes through Caminho da Trincheira and ends beside the car park at the bay. Its length and endpoints give the route clear boundaries if you would like to include a coastal walk in your plans.

Praia do Vigário is approximately 400 metres long and consists of rounded beach stones of varying sizes. It is considered the main bathing spot in Câmara de Lobos. Its approximate length and stony surface are useful features to consider when planning a beach visit. Colourful fishing boats, known in Madeiran as “xavelhas”, are also associated with Baía de Câmara de Lobos.

Caminho Real 25 covers a different geographic scale. A municipal route description published on 6 August 2024 names São Vicente as the starting point, takes the route through the municipalities of Jardim da Serra, Estreito de Câmara de Lobos and Câmara de Lobos, and names the Portas da Cidade in Funchal as the endpoint.

Architecture and History in Câmara de Lobos

Igreja de São Sebastião is a Baroque church in the centre of Câmara de Lobos. It has three naves and a main altar with gilded wood carvings. The three naves describe the layout of the church interior; the carved wooden decoration on the main altar is another specific architectural detail. Construction of what was then Capela de São Sebastião was commissioned in 1426 by order of Infante D. Henrique.

Capela de Nossa Senhora da Conceição is located near the famous Baía de Câmara de Lobos, within the municipality of Câmara de Lobos. In 1993, it was classified as a monument of municipal interest. When exploring historic sites, it offers both a specific location and a municipal classification, while Igreja de São Sebastião provides insight into Baroque architecture and decoration.

Fishing history is another local theme. A fishing neighbourhood once stood on Ilhéu, where Jardim do Ilhéu is located; Câmara de Lobos is known for its centuries-old fishing tradition. Jardim do Ilhéu is set on a cliff facing the sea. The Ilhéu’s former use and the garden’s location thus represent different aspects of the same named place.

Forno da Cal was built in 1874 by Roque Teixeira de Agrela at Trincheira and remained in operation only until the 1970s. The Regional Government of Madeira lists it as local heritage. Its construction date, builder and end of operations place its industrial history in context. Convento de São Bernardino offers another historical reference within the municipality: it dates from the 15th century and is located on the south coast of Madeira Island.

Câmara de Lobos was the first place on Madeira where João Gonçalves Zarco lived; he stayed there from 1420 to 1424. Together with the buildings and fishing tradition, this historical connection offers different perspectives on the destination without needing to combine them into a single attraction.
