For a stay in Porto Da Cruz, hiking, coastal scenery, and the history of sugar production offer different themes to consider when planning. If you are looking for a hotel, these highlights can help you divide your time here according to your interests: between trails in steep terrain, bathing spots, and cultural history.

Landscape Between Coast and Mountains

Penha d’Águia lies between Porto da Cruz and Faial in the municipality of Machico. It is a natural monument and almost 600 metres high. Nearby, Boqueirão lies on the eastern boundary of Porto da Cruz: a cliff about 190 metres high within the Natura 2000 protected-area network.

The Laurisilva forest borders Pico do Suna, and UNESCO has classified it as a World Natural Heritage site since 1999. Trails on the steep slopes of Pico do Suna reach an elevation of 1,200 metres. Hiking and horseback riding are possible there. The elevation and steep terrain give you a concrete point of reference if you choose to make the landscape a focus of your trip.

Hiking Trails and Tour Planning

The Porto da Cruz Natura Trail starts at Praia Alagoa and ends in Porto da Cruz; it is rated difficult. The Vereda da Penha d’Águia is estimated to take about 2 hours and 30 minutes. These trails have different details to consider: the difficulty and start and end points are given for the Porto da Cruz Natura Trail, while an estimated duration is given for the Vereda. Conditions and access may change; check the relevant route before setting out.

The Porto da Cruz–Machico trail-running route is 15.5 kilometres long. Along with the estimated duration of the Vereda, this distance offers a different measure for planning: a specific route length rather than a time estimate. Consider the information for each route separately, rather than treating them as the same kind of tour information.

Coast, Surfing, and Swimming

Praia da Maiata consists of black sand and rounded pebbles. Their dark tones contrast with the clear water and green mountains in the surrounding area. The official tourism portal describes Alagoa and Maiata as Porto da Cruz’s two main surfing beaches and says their conditions are particularly suitable for beginners. Surf conditions are seasonal and weather-dependent.

Praia da Maiata has no support facilities and no lifeguard supervision. Access and safety conditions may change. The Porto da Cruz swimming complex offers different facilities: it has a larger pool for adults and a smaller one for children. There are also changing rooms, showers, toilets, and a snack bar. Sun loungers and fixed parasols can be rented; parking is available on the public road. Since operating conditions may change, check which facilities are available before visiting.

Church and Sugarcane History

The Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe was built in 1574, in the second half of the 16th century. Another way to explore the island’s history is through the Engenhos do Norte, among the most important living testimonies to Madeira’s historical sugar production. They were built in 1927 and equipped with 19th-century machinery.

At the Engenhos do Norte, visitors can watch sugarcane spirit or rum being made using traditional methods. Whether this is possible during your visit may vary depending on operations and the season; if the experience is important to you, check in advance. In addition to the Engenhos do Norte, visitors can sample various sugarcane spirits at Casa do Rum. Tasting availability may also change.
