You can get to know Camacha through its distinctive cultural and landscape features. Historic buildings and local memorials stand alongside wickerwork and folklore; a viewpoint and trails offer another perspective on the area. These different highlights can help you plan your stay around the themes that interest you most.

Churches and local memorials

The Igreja Matriz da Camacha is a late 18th-century building classified as a municipal cultural asset of interest. The foundation stone for the Igreja Paroquial da Camacha was laid on September 30, 1783. This gives the place of worship a specific historical date.

The Capela de São José is located in the center of Camacha. It was built in 1922, inaugurated in 1924, and is considered cultural heritage of the Autonomous Region of Madeira. A bronze bust of Conselheiro Aires de Ornelas stands at Largo da Achada. It was created by P. Anjos Teixeira and inaugurated on July 6, 1969. The building, its inauguration, and the memorial represent different historical points of reference.

Wickerwork and folklore

Madeira wickerwork originated in Camacha. The production process involves several steps: first, the willow is cut, peeled, and dried. The rods are then boiled. Boiling gives them the necessary flexibility and makes them easier to work with. The craft therefore involves not only the finished material but also a clearly defined sequence of preparation steps.

Camacha’s folklore includes songs and dances. The skirts worn by the Viloas are distinctive: they have a red background with colorful vertical stripes. The craft and folklore offer different highlights—willow processing on the one hand, and music, dance, and clothing on the other.

Views and trails

From the Miradouro da Camacha, you can see Sítio da Ribeirinha. The Levada da Serra do Faial crosses the entire parish of Camacha. The route of trail PS PR3 – Levada do Pico do Castelo is described in more detail: it starts at Estrada Regional 120, runs along the foot of Pico do Castelo, circles its southern slope, and follows the Levada do Pico do Castelo to Ribeiro Formoso.

This trail includes a tunnel approximately 530 meters long. The length is an estimate. Check current trail access before setting out. The Miradouro offers a named view of SĂtio da Ribeirinha, while PS PR3 is described as a specific trail through its route and tunnel.

Fresh produce at the Mercadinho

Fresh fruit and vegetables are sold at the Mercadinho da Camacha; much of the produce is grown in the parish itself. Product availability may vary by season. The market adds a connection to locally grown produce to the area’s other highlights.

For planning purposes, the cultural and landscape themes are easy to distinguish: the buildings and memorial focus on specific dates, while the wickerwork features its individual production steps. The viewpoint and trail route, in turn, offer different ways to explore the landscape. You can consider which aspect of Camacha matters most for your trip, then look for hotels in Camacha that suit your travel plans.
