Funchal’s history is reflected in its religious buildings, a fortress and the architecture of the Mercado dos Lavradores. Gardens, collections and views of the Atlantic offer a different focus. When planning your trip, you can consider which aspects of the city interest you most.

Historic Buildings and Traces of the Past

The Sé do Funchal has been classified as a National Monument since 1910. Another historic landmark is the Capela de Santa Catarina, considered the capital’s oldest religious monument. At the Convento de Santa Clara, visitors can see the Gothic cloister. These three buildings offer different ways to explore Funchal through the history of its religious architecture.

The Zona Velha encompasses the area where Funchal’s first settlement is thought to have been established. This historical uncertainty is part of how the district is understood: the first settlement is believed to have been there. Above the waterfront area of the Zona Velha stands the Fortaleza de São Tiago. Dating from the early 17th century, it offers visitors the opportunity to learn about the history of Madeira Island, as well as a privileged view of the Atlantic.

The Fortaleza and the Mercado dos Lavradores represent clearly different points in time. While the fortress dates from the early 17th century, the market opened in 1940. Its architecture is considered typical of the Estado Novo period. If you are looking for a specific historical reference point, the dates of their origins can help distinguish these landmarks rather than treating them as belonging to a single period.

Collections, Gardens and the Market

The Jardim Botânico da Madeira combines a visit to its gardens with the Museu de História Natural and temporary exhibitions; a single ticket covers these areas. Admission arrangements may change, so check them before your visit. The collection at the Museu de História Natural do Jardim Botânico includes fossils, minerals, insects, and preserved vertebrates and invertebrates. Alongside the gardens, the visit therefore offers access to several types of natural history collections.

The Museu de Arte Sacra do Funchal is housed in a former bishop’s palace dating from the 16th century. Its eclectic collection includes works from the 15th to the 19th century. The building and collection offer two historical perspectives: the former palace reflects the history of the building, while the works span several centuries of sacred art.

The Mercado dos Lavradores is both a landmark building and the venue for Noite do Mercado, held at the market every year on December 23. For trip planning, this date sets it apart from the buildings and collections described as permanent attractions. It may be particularly relevant if you are considering a December trip to Funchal.

Green Spaces, Plants and Views

At Parque de Santa Catarina, the panoramic view stretches from Funchal Bay to Ponta do Garajau. The park also has a small lagoon with an island, created as a place for the birds living there to rest and nest. The view and lagoon highlight different aspects of the same garden: a panorama across the landscape and a habitat for birds.

Miradouro do Pico Alto lies at an altitude of 1,129 metres. From there, the view takes in Funchal’s coastline, the Atlantic Ocean and the city’s bay. Compared with the panorama from Parque de Santa Catarina, the specific elevation of this viewpoint offers another reference point for planning your trip.

The two coastal paths are also distinguished by different features. The Passeio Público Marítimo runs through the west of the city, from Rua do Gorgulho (Lido) to Ponta da Cruz. Along the route are Praça da Região Autónoma da Madeira, Clube Naval do Funchal, Estação de Biologia Marítima and Complexo Balnear da Ponta Gorda. The Passeio Marítimo do Funchal, meanwhile, is characterized along its entire length by a varied range of plants, including endemic Madeiran species as well as various exotic plants.
