Praia das Maçãs combines a beach with specific bathing facilities, a named tram line and several historical themes. When choosing your destination, it is worth considering these aspects separately: the beach’s designation concerns assistance with swimming and sunbathing, the tram provides route and journey-time information, and the archaeological evidence spans different periods. This will help you decide whether the beach, transport connection or local history is the main consideration for your stay.

Beach and bathing facilities

Praia das Maçãs is designated as a Praia Acessível (Accessible Beach). Equipment and staff make it easier for people with reduced mobility to swim in the sea and sunbathe. There is also a saltwater swimming pool right next to the beach. Its availability may vary; if you plan to use the pool during your stay, check that it is open before visiting. The designation specifies assistance with swimming in the sea and sunbathing, while the pool is a separate bathing facility at the beach.

Taking the Sintra Tram

The Sintra Tram line connects Vila Alda in Estefânia with Praia das Maçãs along a route of almost 11 kilometres. A tram journey takes about 45 minutes. The route length and journey time offer different planning details: almost 11 kilometres describes the length of the connection, while around 45 minutes is the approximate time a journey takes. The tram reached Praia das Maçãs in 1905. The route, approximate journey time and historical arrival are therefore three distinct points of reference for understanding the tram service.

Archaeology and local history

The prehistoric monument of Praia das Maçãs, at Outeiro das Mós in Colares, Sintra, is classified as a National Monument. The Alto da Vigia archaeological site documents use during Roman, Islamic and modern times. Praia das Maçãs was the first beach in Sintra to become known through tourism. This connection with tourism adds a different perspective to the archaeological dates, placing the beach within Sintra’s tourism history. When planning your visit, it is also important to note the difference in status: the monument’s classification is permanent, whereas the swimming pool’s availability may vary.

Name and tradition

The traditional origin of the name Praia das Maçãs is associated with apples carried from orchards across the Ribeira de Colares to the beach. According to local tradition, this story behind the name links orchards, the watercourse and the beach. The procession in honour of Nossa Senhora da Praia is also part of local tradition: it passes through the streets of the village with 12 statues carried on litters and ends at the beach. The two traditions differ in form: one explains the name; the other is a procession following a specific route through the streets to the beach.
