Rio De Mouro: Green Spaces and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Rio De Mouro
Rio De Mouro offers several distinct points of interest for planning a trip: green spaces, a network of walking and cycling paths, and sites with cultural and historical significance. If you are looking for a hotel, these themes can help you get a sense of the destination. The parks serve different purposes, while the cultural sites provide additional insight into the history of Rio de Mouro. You can tailor your choices to give more consideration to green spaces, paths or cultural sites.
Green spaces with different features
Parque Urbano da Rinchoa–Fitares was inaugurated on 24 May 2015 and covers approximately 12 hectares. Its natural landscape is home to diverse fauna and flora associated with waterside areas. Facilities include picnic tables, bicycle racks, a leisure pavilion and information boards. The park’s area, landscape and facilities each provide a different way to understand it: the area indicates its approximate size, the waterside areas its connection to nature, and the facilities the amenities available.
Parque Linear da Ribeira da Laje has a different focus. A network of walking and cycling paths connects Mem Martins and Rio de Mouro; at the same time, the park forms a green corridor between the urban parishes of Rio de Mouro and Mem Martins in the municipality of Sintra. When comparing the two green spaces, the linear park is defined by the connection between the places, while Parque Urbano da Rinchoa–Fitares is defined by its area and named facilities. This distinguishes a network of paths connecting two places from a park whose size and facilities offer specific points of reference.
Matinha de Fitares is also a green space, but has its own geographical context: it lies in the centre of Fitares and is intended to combine recreation and sport for people living in the parish of Rio de Mouro. The three green spaces can therefore be considered from different perspectives: a park’s facilities, a network of walking and cycling paths between two places, or the central location and intended purpose of a green space. This allows you to give appropriate weight to the features most relevant to your trip without treating the different places as interchangeable.
Cultural sites and history
Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Belém is the parish church of Rio de Mouro. It was built in 1563 at the initiative of Cardinal D. Henrique and entrusted to the Hieronymites. This gives the church a specific place in the history of the town: its origins are linked to a particular year, an initiator and its transfer to a religious order. If you are interested in the historical background of Rio de Mouro, this is a clearly dated point of reference.
Another way to explore the town’s history is through Casa-Museu de Leal da Câmara. It is located in the house where Leal da Câmara lived from 1930 until his death in 1948. The artist’s Saloio collections have been on display at Núcleo dos Saloios since 21 July 2003. The dates relate to different chapters: 1930 to 1948 refers to Leal da Câmara’s life in the house, and 2003 to the start of the collections’ display in this section. The artist’s former home and the collections on display are thus two distinct aspects of the cultural site.
The cultural routes project developed by Sintra City Council includes the Roteiro Patrimonial de Rio de Mouro. If you include this route in your plans, check the latest route materials and practical information in advance, as they may change. Rio de Mouro railway station is also a point of reference for getting there: it is on the Linha de Sintra. Check the railway’s current service information before travelling.
