Malveira: Markets, Mills and History
Accommodation in Malveira
Malveira combines a hiking route among windmills with markets, local specialties and historic buildings. If you are looking for a hotel in Malveira, you can decide what to focus on depending on whether you are mainly interested in hiking, discovering regional products or learning about the town’s history.
Hiking and Milling Heritage
The PR8_MFR hiking route starts and ends at Jardim de São Paulo in Malveira. The garden is therefore both the starting point and the end point of the trail. Along the way, the route passes between windmills that form part of the milling heritage of the Malveira region. These mills played an important role in the region’s rural economy until the second half of the 20th century. Having the same starting and ending point gives the trail a clear connection to the area, while the mills along the way offer a glimpse into the region’s economic history. A group of well-preserved, still-working windmills is also located near Malveira.
Markets and Local Specialties
The Feira da Malveira dates back to the late 18th century. The market in Malveira offers, among other things, tools, shoes, clothing, furniture, antiques, animals, fresh fish, vegetables and flowers. The Feira de Artesanato e Produtos Regionais da Malveira takes place at Largo da Feira. On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, visitors will find mainly agricultural produce such as vegetables, legumes and fruit, as well as Pão com Chouriço. The two ranges of goods are easy to distinguish: the market also includes many non-food items, while the Feira on the days mentioned focuses mainly on agricultural products and Pão com Chouriço. Trouxas da Malveira are made exclusively in Malveira.
Historic Buildings and Culture
The construction of the Ermida de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios was authorized by Lisbon’s first Patriarch, D. Thomaz de Almeida, in a decree issued in Lisbon on 8 May 1723. Forte da Feira was built before October 1810 under the direction of Lieutenant Colonel Richard Fletcher. It has a star-shaped ground plan and is part of the second line of defense. The dates refer to different stages: construction of the Ermida was authorized in 1723, while the construction period of the Forte refers to a time before October 1810. The ground plan describes the shape of the Forte; its inclusion in the second line of defense refers to a separate military aspect. The Museu Popular Beatriz Costa is located in the Centro Cultural da Malveira.
