Loures: Architectural History, Culture and Green Spaces
Accommodation in Loures
Loures offers a range of ways to explore its architectural history, culture and green spaces. The historic centre, individual buildings and public open spaces each have their own character. Their dates and former uses help you understand the municipality’s different historical layers. You can decide whether you would like to get to know Loures primarily through its architecture, local history or the amenities in its green spaces.
Historic Centre and Architectural History
The historic centre developed alongside the parish church of Loures and gradually spread towards the slopes of Alvogas, the riverbanks and the former landing stage at the old bridge over the River Loures. Casa do Adro, a 17th-century residence, stands next to the parish church. Its courtyard contains a water-lifting wheel and a small porch. From 1985 to 1998, the house was home to the town museum.
Palácio dos Marqueses da Praia e Monforte dates from the first half of the 19th century. After the municipality was established in 1886, the building housed the seat of the Loures municipal administration; today, it is the seat of the Municipal Assembly. Paços do Concelho offers another architectural landmark: built in 1916, it is Neoclassical in style, with Art Nouveau and Historicist elements. The commercial buildings on Rua da República reflect the Modernist style of the 1940s. Their design combines azulejos, glass, wood, wrought iron, concrete and stone.
Igreja de Santa Maria de Loures also tells the story of several building phases: originally a Templar chapel, it was altered in the 17th and 18th centuries and rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake. Edifício 4 de Outubro was a former seat of the municipal administration. On 4 October 1910 at 3 p.m., the Republic was proclaimed there and a green-and-red flag was raised. Fonte 4 de Outubro dates from 1720. It was once supplied with water from an aqueduct built during the time of the Marquis of Pombal.
Green Spaces and Cultural Offerings
Parque Adão Barata is a green space with a sports court, two children’s playgrounds, a senior fitness park, a picnic area and food and drink facilities. There is also parking for 50 vehicles. The park is fully accessible to people with reduced mobility. If accessibility or a particular facility is important to your plans, check the relevant conditions on site.
Parque Adão Barata is also home to Galeria Municipal Vieira da Silva. Its cultural education activities include creative workshops, guided visits and laboratories for artistic experimentation. If you are planning your trip around a particular event, check in advance whether it will take place during your visit.
Jardim Municipal Major Rosa Bastos is in the centre of Loures. Its features include a large lawn, a water basin, a modern children’s playground, a picnic area and a bandstand from the 1950s. Comparing the two green spaces, Parque Adão Barata stands out for features including its sports court, senior fitness park and parking, while the Jardim has its own character, with a lawn, water basin and bandstand. The statue of the Saloios next to the Jardim commemorates local traditions and the collective memory of the municipality of Loures.
Local Tradition in Historical Context
Historically, the Saloio tradition of the municipality of Loures included supplying Lisbon with horticultural produce, as well as other goods and services. This connection adds a perspective on the former relationship between the municipality and the capital to the story of its architectural history. Together with the different building phases, memorial sites and green spaces, it offers another way to shape your visit to Loures around a theme.
