Discover Benfica: culture, history and green spaces
Accommodation in Benfica
Benfica offers several ways to shape a trip: historic sites, culture at Palácio Baldaya, Mercado de Benfica and green spaces of very different sizes. You can tailor the focus of your stay to your interests. When choosing a hotel in Benfica, it helps to consider whether you are most interested in culture, history, the market or green spaces.
Culture and library at Palácio Baldaya
Palácio Baldaya offers several cultural attractions: the building has multipurpose spaces for concerts and exhibitions, and it is also home to a library. The palace is therefore associated with both event spaces and a library. If a concert or exhibition is the deciding factor for your trip, plan around the relevant date. The library adds a different focus within the same building.
Historic sites and route
For a historical exploration of Benfica, “Benfica Footsteps” is a clearly named route. It is a historical walking route through the Freguesia de Benfica and includes 32 sites. The route thus links numerous stops in a themed format; unlike a single historic building, it offers a broader focus. This lets you choose between a route and individual architectural points of interest when including the area’s history in your plans.
These architectural points of interest include the Castelinhos buildings at Portas de Benfica, constructed in the late 19th century. At Chafariz de Benfica, the design takes centre stage: the fountain was built to a design by Reinaldo dos Santos and Francisco Cangalhas. These offer different ways to explore history: the construction period of a group of buildings and the names of the designers of a fountain.
What’s on offer at Mercado de Benfica
Mercado de Benfica offers a different focus. It covers an area of 2,800 m² and has more than 200 sales outlets. Products on offer include fresh and frozen fish, meat, fruit and vegetables, baked goods, cured meats and regional products. The figures give the market a clear sense of scale, while the product categories show the variety of its offerings. Unlike a cultural event or a historic route, the market is a destination whose appeal is found in its sales outlets and products.
Green spaces on different scales
It is worth looking at two distinctly different scales when considering green spaces. Parque Silva Porto covers 4.11 hectares and is also known as Mata de Benfica. By contrast, Parque Florestal de Monsanto covers 900 hectares. It extends across the territory of six Freguesias, including Benfica. The difference in area is considerable; at the same time, Monsanto’s geographical reach spans several Freguesias. So for orientation, it is not only the comparison in size that matters, but also the fact that Benfica is one of the six Freguesias across whose territory the park extends.
The places mentioned offer different focal points for planning your trip: culture and a library at Palácio Baldaya, history explored through a route or individual architectural points of interest, the products at Mercado de Benfica, and green spaces of very different sizes.
