Amadora combines archaeological remains with historic homes and cultural buildings, as well as a contemporary cultural programme. To plan your trip, you can start by choosing a focus: prehistory and archaeology, architecture and local heritage, or comics and events. Walks and trails also offer a distinct perspective on the city. If you are looking for a hotel in Amadora, this selection can help you organise your interests for your stay.

Archaeological traces in Amadora

The Grutas de Carenque, also known as the Necrópole de Carenque, are caves carved into the rock by human hands. They date from the end of the Neolithic period, around the 3rd millennium BC, and were used until the Chalcolithic, or Copper Age. The site consists of three collective tombs carved into the limestone outcrops of Tojal de Vila Chã. Archaeologist Manuel Heleno discovered and excavated the tombs in 1932. Because of their importance for understanding prehistory, they are protected as a National Monument; this protection was granted by Government Decree No. 26:235 of 20 January 1936. Guided tours are available for organised groups by prior arrangement. If you are planning such a tour, make sure to arrange it well in advance as part of your visit planning.

Another archaeological trace is the Villa romana da Quinta da Bolacha. It was discovered in 1979 in the parish of Falagueira-Venda Nova during investigations of a Roman aqueduct identified in the municipality of Amadora. The surviving Roman structures at the villa reach a height of up to one metre. The information about Carenque and the villa offers two distinct perspectives on the past: the tombs date back to prehistory, while the villa bears witness to Roman structures.

Houses, museums and local heritage

Casa Roque Gameiro was built between 1898 and 1901 in the parish of Venteira as a residence for the watercolour painter Alfredo Roque Gameiro and his family. Its distinctive features include azulejo tilework. The dining room contains a tile design by Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro with naturalistic themes. Those interested in architecture and design will find a tangible insight into building history and decorative arts here. The main building of Recreios da Amadora was inaugurated on 17 August 1914.

The Núcleo Museológico do Casal da Falagueira has six exhibition spaces devoted to local heritage. The Galeria Municipal Artur Bual organises exhibitions and has developed innovative cultural projects over the years that shape Amadora’s artistic and cultural profile. Together, these institutions offer different ways to explore local heritage: a historic home with distinctive tile art, exhibition spaces dedicated to local heritage, and a programme of cultural projects.

Festival and performing arts

Amadora BD was founded in 1990, is organised by the Câmara Municipal da Amadora, and is dedicated to Portuguese and international comics. The festival has been held continuously since its founding and takes place annually. The annual programme includes autograph sessions, exhibitions, presentations of new releases, workshops and other presentations. If comics are your travel theme, the festival offers a distinctive cultural focus in Amadora; you can check the specific programme to match your travel dates.

Cineteatro D. João V is also part of the cultural offering: the venue contributes to the cultural life of Amadora and the Lisbon metropolitan area. The city’s historic sites, exhibitions, projects and festival programme complement one another, so a visit need not be limited to a single form of culture.

Walks and trails

Parque das Artes e do Desporto has a three-kilometre circular walking route. Amadora’s network of walking trails currently extends for around 40 kilometres. Parque Fonte das Avencas has paths for walking and mountain biking. The park also includes a wooded area dominated by pine trees, as well as water tunnels. For a break, there is a picnic area with pools supplied by a water pipeline. These specific details can help you think of walks, longer trails and a mountain-bike ride as different options for your stay.

Planning your stay

Amadora railway station is on CP’s Sintra Line and is one way to travel to the city. If you are planning to travel by train, check the connections for your dates. For the rest of your day, you can follow your interests: Carenque and the Roman villa offer archaeological history, Casa Roque Gameiro and the museum focus on architecture and local heritage, and Amadora BD on comics and an annual cultural programme. This makes it easy to shape your stay around the things that interest you most in Amadora.
