If you’re planning a stay in Ferrel, you can choose from a variety of coastal landscapes, festivals and historic buildings. These themes reveal different sides of the destination: alongside its beaches, religious traditions and the town’s history can also shape the focus of your trip.

Beaches and landscapes

Praia do Baleal Norte, also known as Praia do Lagido, has an extensive sandy beach and lively seas; it also holds Blue Flag status. Sea conditions and lifeguard supervision are seasonal, which is worth bearing in mind when planning your trip. At Praia da Almagreira, cliffs and rocks meet wild vegetation and golden sand.

Praia do Pico da Mota also offers an extensive beach and lively seas. Agricultural fields lie above the cliffs, and a small watercourse that flows at certain times of the year is also part of the landscape. Praia das Cebolas, by contrast, is a small beach between rock formations on the southern peninsula of Baleal. From there, you can see the rock formation of Ilha das Cebolas. Together, these beaches offer contrasting coastal scenery: extensive sandy shores, a landscape shaped by cliffs and a small beach overlooking a distinctive rock formation.

Another landscape option is the extensive Pinhal de Ferrel, on the eastern edge of town. It has a picnic area. So, alongside the beaches, a pine forest is another attraction to choose from in Ferrel.

Culture, buildings and festival dates

Capela de Ferrel, also known as Capela de Nossa Senhora da Guia, is classified as an imóvel de interesse público (IIP), a property of public interest. Its Mannerist architecture dates from the late 17th century and has undergone later alterations. The single-nave interior contains gilded altarpieces. The protected complex also includes the churchyard, a cross standing in front of it and a garden at the rear. The site therefore encompasses not only the chapel but also features in its immediate surroundings.

Festivals in honour of various saints are an important part of local tradition. Festa em Honra de Nossa Senhora da Guia is Ferrel’s main village festival; the earliest records of it date back to the 17th century. Festa em Honra de Santa Quitéria is a religious and traditional festival usually held on the last weekend of October. Festa em Honra de Santo Estêvão is normally celebrated in November, as close as possible to 11 November. The dates therefore differ: a weekend is specified for Santa Quitéria, while Santo Estêvão is celebrated during a period in November. If you’re planning your trip around a festival, check the specific dates for the year in question.

On the Baleal peninsula, the small Ermida de Santo Estêvão stands on a rock formation. Its origins may date back to the 16th or 17th century. Archaeological traces also tell of a long past: shell middens associated with Fortim do Baleal have been identified in Ferrel. They may be prehistoric, possibly Neolithic; another possible interpretation is that they were used in connection with the exploitation of aquatic resources.

Plan your journey and activities

Ferrel is accessible from Lisbon by bus, including services operated by Rede Nacional de Expressos or Rodoviária do Tejo. Another option is to take the Linha do Oeste to Caldas da Rainha and then continue by bus to Peniche; this bus travels via Baleal and Ferrel. It’s worth checking timetables for your travel dates when planning your trip. By car, road access is via the A8 heading west and the IP6. Taxis can be particularly useful for occasional journeys between Peniche, Baleal and Ferrel, especially at night; availability and local conditions may vary.

In Baleal, Ferrel Surf House rents hardboards, softboards and bicycles to guests and external visitors. This is a practical way to combine activity planning with equipment rental; the available items range from two types of surfboard to bicycles.
