When travelling to Atouguia Da Baleia, it is worth looking beyond a list of buildings to explore its cultural themes. The heritage here tells stories of municipal autonomy, religious architecture, and museum interpretation. Certain details can help you decide what to focus on during your stay.

Municipal history at the Pelourinho

The Manueline Pelourinho of Atouguia da Baleia is associated with the town’s former local autonomy and stands in its original location. Its architecture offers concrete details to look for: a three-tiered base, an ornamented column, a faceted capital, and a pinecone finial. Two different aspects come together here. Its connection to autonomy points to the town’s history, while its structure and ornamentation make the monument’s form a subject in its own right. Those interested in history can therefore view it both as a civic symbol and through its architectural details.

Churches between Gothic and Baroque

The 12th-century Igreja de São Leonardo is in the old town of Atouguia da Baleia. Its Gothic portal has capitals depicting mythological creatures. The chancel contains the sarcophagus of Dom Álvaro Gonçalves de Ataíde, the first Count of Atouguia, as well as altarpieces and paintings from the 16th century. The portal and chancel offer different points of interest: the figures on the Gothic portal on the one hand, and the tomb and furnishings from a later period on the other.

The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição represents a different style. It is a Baroque church dating from the late 17th century, considered a pilgrimage church and attributed to the architect João Antunes. Its chancel walls are clad in marble in various shades. In contrast to the Gothic portal of São Leonardo, the Baroque form of the building and its colourful marble cladding take centre stage here.

The Igreja de São José is also Baroque and dates from the 18th century; its floor plan is octagonal. The church was converted and extended to house the Centro Interpretativo de Atouguia da Baleia (CIAB). The CIAB opened on 17 March 2012. The church’s building history is thus connected with the development of a place for presenting regional history.

The CIAB and its themes

The Centro Interpretativo de Atouguia da Baleia is part of the Peniche municipal museum network and presents an integrated view of the historic region of Atouguia da Baleia. This offers a different approach from viewing a single building: the focus here is on understanding the region as a historical whole.

The exhibition “A Baleia em Atouguia” is housed at the CIAB and explores historical narratives about human and non-human realities. Opening hours are listed as Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 am to 1:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Check the hours before your visit.

Defence, collections, and other heritage

Forte da Praia da Consolação stands on a rocky outcrop at the southern end of Praia da Consolação. It was built between 1641 and 1645 at the initiative of D. Jerónimo de Ataíde, Count of Atouguia, to strengthen the defence of Peniche Bay against attacks by privateers. The rocky setting describes the site, while the dates and defensive purpose explain its historical role. The fort’s history also identifies the Count of Atouguia as the person who initiated its construction.

The Misericórdia de Atouguia da Baleia has a collection of liturgical vestments that is unique in the country for its use of bobbin lace. Alongside stone and architectural forms, textile craft is another cultural-history theme here: the collection is distinguished by its bobbin lace.

Remains of the tower and walls survive from the former Castelo de Atouguia da Baleia. They are classified as an “imóvel de interesse público”, or an object of public interest. The Cruzeiro de Atouguia da Baleia adds to the historic heritage as a small religious cross monument dating from the 16th century.
