Coimbrão brings together Lagoa da Ervedeira and Praia do Pedrógão with regional crafts, folklore and cuisine. The lagoon is known for its swimming areas, canoeing and trails; at the beach, an expansive sandy shore and the centuries-old Arte Xávega fishing tradition shape the scene.

A lagoon with swimming areas, trails and birdlife

Lagoa da Ervedeira is in the parish of Coimbrão and is 600 metres long. The lagoon has a bar, a picnic area and a wooden walkway. Two areas are used for swimming; sport fishing and canoeing are also practised. The Rota dos Medronheiros runs around the lagoon and follows almost entirely forest paths. A circular trail around the lagoon crosses walkways and passes bird hides. The Estação de Biodiversidade introduces visitors to 19 bird species native to the area. The lagoon experience therefore extends from time by the water to trails and birdwatching.

Beach and fishing tradition at Praia do Pedrógão

Praia do Pedrógão has an expansive sandy beach. It has been awarded the Blue Flag, the “Accessible Beach” distinction and “Qualidade de Ouro”. It is also connected to the Estrada Atlântica and an extensive cycle path. Arte Xávega is a centuries-old artisanal fishing tradition that continues at Praia do Pedrógão. If you would like to see the tradition in action, this depends on the sea conditions.

Festivals, crafts and cultural heritage

The Rancho Folclórico do Coimbrão “Flores de Verde Pinho” organises the Festival de Folclore do Coimbrão; the 2026 calendar lists its 43rd edition. The return of the Festival da Sardinha to Praia do Pedrógão is also listed in the 2026 calendar. At this festival, grilled sardines are served with the authentic flavour of local tradition. Coimbrão’s traditional crafts include willow baskets made from twigs, woollen goods, textiles made with four or six needles, and fans made from seagull feathers. The fans are made to order; you can buy the other handicrafts at festivals, markets and specialist shops. The Capela de São Tiago contains images of Nossa Senhora da Nazaré and Saint James.

Regional specialities

Morcelas do Coimbrão are a regional speciality made with blood and rice. Broa de Milho is also a traditional speciality; its production is kept alive only by older residents.

What will shape your trip?

If you are looking for a hotel in Coimbrão, you can start by deciding what you want to focus on during your trip. Lagoa combines swimming areas and canoeing with forest trails and birdwatching; at the beach, an expansive sandy shore, a cycle path and Arte Xávega come together, though the opportunity to see the fishing tradition depends on sea conditions. Crafts, folklore and regional specialities complement these natural and coastal attractions with cultural and culinary interests. This lets you tailor your search to the things that matter during your stay.
