Discover Alfeizerão
Accommodation in Alfeizerão
Alfeizerão can be explored through a wide range of travel interests: Manueline architecture, the memory of a former seaport, a circular trail along the Ribeira da Amieira and Pão de Ló de Alfeizerão. The places and details below offer starting points for a stay focused on culture, history or landscape.
Manueline Heritage and Church Architecture
The Pelourinho Manuelino de Alfeizerão was erected following the royal charter issued by King Manuel I on 1 October 1514. Since 1933, it has been classified as an “Imóvel de Interesse Público” (IIP), or Property of Public Interest. The charter and the classification provide two distinct historical points of reference for the monument: the royal charter from the early 16th century and its later designation.
The Igreja Paroquial de Alfeizerão has a rectangular floor plan, a two-part façade with three registers and a bell tower at the northeast corner. Inside is a hexagonal stone baptismal font with a cord motif characteristic of Manueline art. The church thus brings together the building’s structure and a single detail considered significant in art history.
Fonte Velha, the Castle and the Former Seaport
Fonte Velha is located on Rua do Relego in the southern part of Alfeizerão, at the oldest and most historic edge of the settlement. Its façade has an entrance with a round-arched portal, leading to a plunge pool and a shell-shaped outlet. The structure is covered by a barrel vault. A cubic base sits on the projecting keystone, possibly once supporting a heraldic stone element.
Part of a wall remains from Castelo de Alfeizerão. The castle stood on a commanding hill, at an elevation of about 45 metres, overlooking the coast and the hinterland beyond. Alfeizerão was also a former seaport and preserves the memory of a saltwater quay. This maritime connection differs from the architectural details of the church, Fonte Velha and the castle: the focus here is on the town’s former role as a seaport and the memory of the quay.
Circular Trail, Local Speciality and Festival Dates
The PR14 ACB circular trail – Alfeizerão–Azenhas da Macarca follows the Ribeira da Amieira and passes through areas of riverside vegetation. This offers a different connection with water from that of the former saltwater quay: here, the stream and the vegetation along its banks shape the trail’s character. If you would like to focus on the landscape as well as the town’s historic features, the circular trail offers a distinct starting point.
In Alfeizerão, you can try the famous Pão de Ló de Alfeizerão. Two festivals have specific dates: Festa do Santo Amaro on 15 January and Festa de Nossa Senhora do Rosário on the first Sunday in September. If you would like to plan your trip around either of these festivals, check the dates locally in advance.
