Valezim: Mining History and Panoramic Views
Accommodation in Valezim
Valezim can be explored from several perspectives when planning a trip: the town center has notable landmarks that reflect its history, the Minas do Círio point to the area’s former ore mining, and Monte do Calvário offers sweeping views of the landscape. There is also the Rota das Minas do Círio and the Senhora da Saúde festival. If you are looking for a hotel in Valezim, you can tailor your stay to your particular interests, whether they are architecture, mining history, a described route, or the September festival.
Town Center and Historic Buildings
In the center of Valezim, the Fonte do Terreiro stands opposite the Castelo Branco family manor house. It is one of the town’s oldest and most significant fountains. Its location makes it an easy landmark to find in the town center. The Pelourinho de Valezim is a granite pillory dating from the 16th century. The Fonte do Terreiro and the pillory have different points of interest: for the fountain, these are its central location and its standing among the town’s oldest and most significant fountains; for the pillory, the defining features are its granite construction and 16th-century date.
Chapels and Panoramic Views from Monte do Calvário
At the entrance to Valezim stands the Capela de São João, a small rectangular granite chapel with an open porch. Outside the town, the Nossa Senhora da Saúde sanctuary on Monte do Calvário consists of three chapels. From the summit of Monte do Calvário, by the sanctuary at an altitude of 748 meters, the view stretches across the middle Mondego valley and the Caramulo, Arada, and Montemuro mountain ranges. These offer two different ways to experience the town and its surroundings: at the Capela de São João, the focus is on its size, layout, material, and porch; at Monte do Calvário, the three-part sanctuary and the sweeping views come together.
Route Description and Mining Traces
A route description published in 2022 starts the Rota das Minas do Círio in Valezim and leads through a valley on the western slope of the Serra da Estrela. At the Minas do Círio, the ruins of several buildings and industrial facilities used for mining have survived. Ore was crushed and washed in the open air there; mining also left altered soils. The mining traces therefore include both individual surviving buildings and facilities, and changes to the soil. The route description specifies the starting point and landscape; the information about the Minas describes structural traces and changes to the ground caused by ore mining.
September Festival
The Senhora da Saúde festival is celebrated at the Nossa Senhora da Saúde sanctuary on the first Sunday in September. Its annual date may be relevant when choosing when to travel.
