Manteigas offers a range of starting points for planning your trip: hiking trails, landscapes, architectural history, and textile and culinary themes. If you are looking for a hotel in Manteigas, you can consider which of these facets you would like to focus on during your stay. The trails differ, for example, in length and starting point; historic buildings, an interpretation centre and regional facilities add to the range of possible stops.

Planning hiking trails: length, starting point and trail network

The Rota do Glaciar is a 17.2-kilometre linear trail. It starts either in Vila de Manteigas or at Torre. Check local conditions and trail markings before setting out. Another specific starting point is Igreja de Santa Maria: the Rota da Vila begins beside the church in Vila de Manteigas. The described starting points therefore make it possible to decide whether to plan your hike around the long linear route or the trail beginning in the town.

The Manteigas Trilhos Verdes network comprises 200 kilometres of hiking trails. The CIVGLAZ also presents 16 hiking trails. These figures refer to different things: 200 kilometres describes the trail network, while the number 16 refers to the trails presented there. The main attraction at CIVGLAZ is a simulator that depicts a balloon or airship ride along the 13-kilometre-long Vale Glaciar do ZĂŞzere. Interactive panels cover the valley's predominant animal and plant species. If you are planning a visit, check the latest visitor information in advance.

Landscape and outdoor activities

The entire municipality of Manteigas lies within the Parque Natural da Serra da Estrela. On the edge of Vila de Manteigas, Parque da Várzea is located on the left bank of the Rio Zêzere. Its facilities include shaded areas, a bar and an artificial lake; the bar operates seasonally. The park offers a different way to experience the landscape than the marked hiking trails. Take the bar's seasonal opening into account when planning your visit.

Poço do Inferno waterfall lies at an altitude of 1,080 metres in a gorge carved by the Ribeira de Leandres. This watercourse is a tributary of the Rio Zêzere. Canyoning can be practised along the Ribeira de Leandres on a signposted route; the meeting point is Poço do Inferno. Ask the providers about the conditions before taking part. The waterfall and canyoning route therefore offer two different starting points for planning: a natural site with a stated altitude and an activity along the watercourse.

Culture and regional features

Igreja Matriz de Santa Maria was built between 1336 and 1338. The Rota da Vila begins beside Igreja de Santa Maria in Vila de Manteigas. Another historic building is Casa das Obras, a manor house classified as an “Imóvel de Interesse Público” (Property of Public Interest). Burel Factory preserves the cultural and industrial heritage of the mountain region through traditional textile techniques. These places and themes offer different insights into Manteigas: from architectural history and the protection of a historic building to textile crafts.

Water and regional production are also among the area's distinctive features. The water at Termas de Manteigas is sulphurous, bicarbonate-rich, sodium-rich and fluoride-rich. Viveiro das Trutas has a sales outlet for trout from its own fish farm. If you are interested in regional products, this is a specific place to visit alongside the area's landscape and cultural attractions. Expo Estrela is an activities exhibition and handicrafts fair associated with the Carnival weekend in SĂŁo Pedro, Manteigas.
