Discover Budens: Heritage and Nature
Accommodation in Budens
For your trip to Budens, historic architectural features, mill history and trails offer a range of points of interest; natural sites can also be found in the surrounding area. Depending on whether you are interested in architecture, longer circular walks or a shorter nature trail, you can focus on different themes.
Architecture and History
The Igreja de São Sebastião is a single-nave church dating from the 16th century and dedicated to Saint Sebastian. Inside are two intricately crafted Manueline holy water fonts from the same period. The portal bears the date 1762 and is considered one of the finest examples of 18th-century sculpture in the Algarve. The building thus allows you to distinguish between the older church structure and the much later work on the portal.
Moinho da Torre combines a long history of operation with a later reconstruction: the mill operated until 1958, was reconstructed in the 21st century, and remains fully functional. Its circular stone architecture comprises two storeys, and its walls are up to 95 centimetres thick. Its floor plan, height and wall thickness offer a tangible sense of its construction, without reducing the mill's history to its age alone.
Fonte Milenar also features several details: it includes a rectangular livestock trough made of red sandstone. Marks from sharpening axe blades can be seen on it. Fonte Milenar lies a few dozen metres south of Roman basins that were probably part of a thermal complex. The spring can be reached on foot, by bicycle and by car.
The date of construction of Ermida de Santo António is uncertain: it was probably built in the 17th century and attached to the parish of Budens. A tiled vault is located above the altar area. Capela de Santo António was an important place of worship for local residents and was formerly used for baptisms and weddings. The chapel is on the edge of Budens, in a church square with a staircase.
Circular Trails for Different Time Budgets
For a longer day of hiking, there are two circular trails to choose from, with clearly different distances and durations. PR8 VBP Trilho dos Dinossauros is 10 kilometres long, takes 3 hours and 10 minutes, and is rated as moderately difficult. PR7 VBP Trilho dos Romanos e dos Piratas covers 14 kilometres and is listed as taking 5 hours; its difficulty is rated easy. The longer trail therefore also takes longer, but is rated easier than the shorter PR8. In this case, distance alone does not indicate how the difficulty is rated.
The Estação da Biodiversidade da Boca do Rio near Budens offers a different scale: an approximately 2-kilometre circular walking trail starts at Praia da Boca do Rio. Information panels provide a field-guide-style introduction to some of the animals and plants found there. This route differs from the two longer circular trails both in its approximate length and in its focus on observing nature.
Landscape and Other Nearby Places
The wetland Paul da Lontreira, also known as Paul de Budens, covers about 134 hectares and is named after the otters found there. The three watercourses Ribeira de Vale Barão, Ribeira de Vale de Boi and Ribeira de Budens flow into the sea at Praia da Boca do Rio, where the wetland known as Paul da Lontreira formed. The landscape can also be understood through the names and courses of these watercourses.
There are also coastal places near Budens with different historical and landscape connections. Praia das Furnas is named after the coastal caves in its limestone cliffs and lies entirely within Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina. In 1632, Ruínas do Forte de São Luís de Almádena were built at Praia da Boca do Rio to protect the tuna fishery on the adjacent beach. At Praia da Salema, a clearly visible path of dinosaur footprints can be seen on a slab at the western end, at the foot of the steps leading down to the beach.
These places each offer a different focus: the river mouth and wetland represent watercourses and nature, the ruins tell the story of the tuna fishery, and the footprints at Salema are a tangible palaeontological discovery. Combined with the architectural details and circular trails of varying lengths, they let you tailor your trip to Budens to the themes that interest you most.
