Conceição: Forest, Waterbirds and Architectural History
Accommodation in Conceição
In Conceição, nature and architectural history offer different interests for travellers. Parque de Lazer da Mata da Conceição is known for its trails and opportunities to observe nature, while Igreja Matriz da Conceição de Tavira offers a different focus with its architectural history. Traditional Algarve houses and roundhouses, once used for agricultural purposes, are also part of the picture. When choosing a destination, you can therefore consider both the landscape and wildlife, as well as church architecture and local building styles.
Forest and Hills
Perímetro Florestal da Conceição de Tavira stretches along the southern slope of Ribeira da Gafa, at the foot of the Serra de Tavira. This forest area is home to pine trees, cork oaks, holm oaks, cypresses, carob trees, eucalyptus, strawberry trees and acacias. The Perímetro also has the status of a hunting refuge; red-legged partridges, wild boars, foxes, wild rabbits and hares are found there. The landscape also features hills: Estorninhos is designated as one of Conceição’s typical hill areas, and windmills are among the characteristic features of the typical hilly landscape. When choosing where to stay, you can therefore distinguish the forest vegetation and wildlife from these listed hill features.
Trails and Nature Watching
Parque de Lazer da Mata da Conceição covers around 40 hectares. Its signposted walking trails range from 1 to 2.4 kilometres in length. This gives you a specific measure for comparing the trails by length. The park also has an observatory for waterbirds. A small herd of fallow deer living in semi-captivity can also be observed there. In terms of interests, the Perímetro focuses on forest vegetation and the animal species found there, while the park offers signposted trails and opportunities to observe waterbirds and fallow deer.
Igreja Matriz and Its Architectural History
Igreja Matriz da Conceição de Tavira was already open for worship in 1518, although it had not yet been completed. Its Late Gothic main portal has a pointed arch and five archivolts, or stepped arch mouldings. During work in the mid-18th century, the church received a Baroque gable framing a coat of arms of the Order of Santiago. From the original Gothic construction phase, the main chapel retains a vault with four ribs. These rest on corbels and meet at a keystone bearing the Cross of Santiago and two scallop shells. The church thus brings together both Gothic details and a later Baroque addition.
Houses and Rural Building Styles
Traditional Algarve houses in Conceição are whitewashed and feature decorative façade details and ornately decorated chimneys. The roundhouses add a former agricultural use to these house types: farmers once stored feed for their animals there. These local building styles therefore served different purposes—the design of façades and chimneys on the one hand, and the storage of animal feed on the other. For architecture enthusiasts, Conceição offers more than a single church as a point of interest: traditional houses and their former use also form part of the local landscape.
