Silves: Castle, Architecture and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Silves
Castelo de Silves and its layout
Castelo de Silves is one of Portugal’s most significant Muslim fortifications. Its defensive structure is still divided into two large areas: the Alcáçova and the Medina. This division offers a specific way of looking at the castle: you can consider the complex as a defensive structure while also distinguishing its two named areas. For a trip focused on cultural history, this clearly defined landmark is at the heart of exploring Silves.
Architectural history at the cathedral and church
Sé Catedral de Silves is a Gothic building made of Silves sandstone. It probably stands on the site of the former main Muslim mosque. The cathedral thus brings together a Gothic architectural style and a cautiously worded historical interpretation of its location. Igreja da Misericórdia de Silves draws attention to a different architectural detail: its original building was constructed in the early 16th century, and its Manueline side portal is the only surviving element of that building. The comparison highlights two different architectural features: the cathedral’s Gothic sandstone construction and the church’s surviving portal.
Museum and Islamic past
At Museu Municipal de Arqueologia de Silves, an Almohad cistern is the museum’s focal point: the museum was founded in 1990 based on it. The cistern dates from the 12th to 13th centuries, is about 18 metres deep and has a diameter of 2.5 metres. The proportions make its shape easy to grasp: its depth is considerably greater than its diameter. This archaeological focus differs from the architectural forms of the castle and churches: the emphasis is on a specific object.
Centro de Interpretação do Património Islâmico de Silves organises its themes under the headings Terra, Água and Poesia. It presents the cultural influence of the region’s Islamic past. The Centro currently serves as the municipal tourist information office and as a starting point for visiting Silves’ historic centre. In this way, it combines an interpretation of the region’s past with a role in helping visitors find their way around the historic centre.
Feira Medieval and a regional sweet
Feira Medieval de Silves is an annual cultural event in Silves. It recreates everyday life in the Middle Ages from the 8th to the 15th century. The event offers a distinct way of engaging with history: while the castle, cathedral and church show actual buildings, here the focus is on portrayals of ways of life across several centuries. If you would like to include the Feira in your travel plans, check the event dates for your intended year of travel.
Local food culture can also be explored through a named speciality: Morgado de Silves is a sweet made with eggs and almonds, decorated with sugar leaves and flowers. The combination of almonds, egg and sugar decorations gives this sweet its distinctive character.
