When looking for hotels in Quelfes, you can choose your destination based on the themes you want to shape your stay: architecture and history, natural landscapes, or outdoor activities. The places and features offer different ways to explore these interests.

Nature, Landscapes and Activities

The Parque Natural da Ria Formosa encompasses a variety of landscapes: barrier islands, salt marshes, sandbanks, dunes and salt pans, as well as freshwater and brackish-water lagoons, waterways, agricultural land and woodland. The Purple Swamphen, known in Portuguese as Galinha-sultana, is the symbol of the nature park. This rare and endangered bird species occurs in Ria Formosa. The landscape therefore highlights both a variety of habitats and a distinctive bird species.

The Moinho de Maré de Marim is located at Quinta de Marim in the Parque Natural da Ria Formosa. The tidal mill is currently open to visitors, and its rooftop terrace is also accessible for views of the surrounding area. Check the current access conditions before your visit. The CEAM – Centro de Educação Ambiental de Marim is also located at Quinta de Marim. It features the “Ria Formosa” exhibition, with five sections. The topics range from natural and cultural heritage, geomorphology and lagoon dynamics to habitats, flora and fauna, and the archaeology and history of the nature park.

On Ilha da Armona, there are beaches facing both the sea and the lagoon. At low tide, warm natural pools form there. Possible leisure activities on the island include canoeing, sailing, diving and recreational fishing; offers and conditions may vary by provider. The different sides of the island’s beaches and the pools that form at low tide are two distinct landscape features. You can plan your activities around what you would like to do during your stay.

The Circuito de Manutenção de Pinheiros de Marim has three routes; the longest is 3 km long. Exercise equipment for outdoor workouts is installed along the routes. The longest route, at 3 km, provides a specific distance to use when planning.

The Jardim Mediterrânico de Quelfes uses native vegetation to create a garden with very little or no water. It was inaugurated on 19 November 2022. Designed as a dry garden with plants from the Algarve, it is also intended to serve as an interactive museum with environmental education activities. A specific garden design and an educational purpose therefore go hand in hand.

Architecture and History

The Igreja Matriz de Quelfes brings together several architectural influences: its main portal and chancel arch are in the Renaissance style. A Gothic side door attests to the church’s medieval origins. The spacious interior has three naves. The architectural features and the layout of the interior offer different ways to understand the building: the side door points to its medieval origins, while the portal and chancel arch are described as Renaissance elements.

The Vila Romana da Quinta de Marim is a Roman archaeological site in the parish of Quelfes, near the Algarve coast. The complex comprised a residence, a bathhouse, warehouses, a temple, a mausoleum and several necropolises. The archaeological remains indicate that it was used from the 2nd century until the end of the 4th century or the beginning of the 5th century.

The Torres de Marim and Quatrim in Quelfes were built between the 12th and 16th centuries in connection with the coast and Ria Formosa. They served to monitor and protect the land and the people living along the shore. Another historical connection concerns the Ponte Velha de Quelfes: the bridge is significant to the local population because a battle between residents of OlhĂŁo and Moncarapacho and French troops took place nearby on 18 June 1808.

The Chalé de Marim is also part of the town’s architectural history: the poet João Lúcio commissioned it in 1916. Construction was interrupted after his death in 1918. The Chalé Dr. João Lúcio currently houses the Ecoteca Museum, which is part of the National Network of Ecotecas and is dedicated to environmental education. Together with the CEAM, it shows how natural and cultural heritage is addressed by different institutions.
