Discover Sargaçal
Accommodation in Sargaçal
Sargaçal developed on a very steep slope, at the foot of which lies the agricultural plain of Paul. The older, more densely built-up centre is in the south, with Rua da Caldeiroa as its backbone. To the north, the buildings are more dispersed. The main road, the EM 535-1, passes the old centre and crosses the northern settlement area. To the west, it connects Sargaçal with the EN 120 between Portelas and Bensafrim, and to the east with the EN 125 near Lagos. If you have a specific accommodation in mind, check its address before planning your journeys during your stay.
Wine and Rural Traditions
At Monte da Casteleja, you can combine a guided tour of the vineyard and wine cellar with a tasting of three or four wines and regional snacks. Book the tour and tasting according to the provider’s instructions. The farm shop offers the winery’s organic wines, as well as regional products and Algarve specialities. Check when the shop is open before you visit.
The traditional grape harvest at Monte da Casteleja also follows a precise process: since 2002, the grapes have been selected and cut by hand, transported to the winery in 15 kg crates, and the best grapes are trodden in the lagar. If you are interested in taking part, check the options for the relevant season in advance. The Monte da Casteleja farm in Sargaçal, Lagos, takes its name from the ruins of a small Roman-era castle discovered on the site.
Paul de Lagos and Birdlife
Paul de Lagos is a wetland of great ecological value at the end of the Ribeira de Bensafrim. It is essential for the protection of various species, particularly land and water birds. Within the municipality of Lagos, the area is one of the best places to observe these groups of birds.
To reach the central part of Paul de Lagos, continue for about 200 metres from the N125, turn left, and follow the signs for “Sargaçal”. The distance is approximate; check local road conditions before setting off. An unpaved track crosses part of the reed bed, bringing you into contact with some of the characteristic species of this habitat. Not all areas of the reed bed are accessible. There are also small wooded areas on the right-hand side of the road as you drive towards Sargaçal, where various land birds can be found.
Guided Tours and Activities
BlueFleet runs a guided buggy tour along scenic tracks, streams and rural landscapes in the Sargaçal and Pincho areas. An experienced local guide accompanies the tour. Confirm the booking details before making your plans.
PaintOut Paintball is located on Estrada do Paul in Sargaçal. It offers four different playing fields; confirm the latest details before your visit. If you are choosing between these activities, they offer very different formats: paintball takes place on playing fields, while the buggy tour is a guided ride through the areas mentioned. This can help you decide whether you are looking for an activity on playing fields or a guided tour through the countryside.
Getting Around
Sargaçal is served by route 5, “A ONDA Laranja”. If you plan to travel by bus, check the current timetable before departure. For getting around by road, the EM 535-1 connects the main roads mentioned above; the approximate turning directions from the N125 are useful for reaching Paul de Lagos. These details support different plans: travelling to Sargaçal and finding your way to the central part of the wetland.
