Benagil is known for a distinctive stretch of the Algarve coast. Between Praia de Benagil and Praia da Marinha, predominantly rocky cliffs shape the shoreline; they are permanently or intermittently exposed to the effects of the sea. Around Praia de Benagil, rugged cliffs form grottoes and caves. The coastal area between Benagil and Praia da Marinha lies within the Parque Natural Marinho do Recife do Algarve – Pedra do Valado (PNMRA-PV). For your travel planning, the rocky landscape and its caves take center stage.

Beach and cave system

Praia de Benagil is located in a fishing village. Boats almost obscure its small stretch of sand. This small sandy area contrasts with the predominantly rocky cliffs along this stretch of coast.

The Grutas de Benagil are a group of caves in the Município de Lagoa. The cave system of the Grutas de Benagil extends between Praia do Vale do Lapa and Praia de Albandeira. The names refer to different geographical scales: Praia de Benagil as a beach, the Grutas as a group of caves, and the two other beaches as the endpoints of the cave system described.

The coast from the water and the trail

Boat trips along the coast are available from Benagil. They offer views of the heavily sculpted rock faces and distinctive sea caves. Along the hiking trail, rest areas provide views of rocky headlands and various karst formations. The viewpoints differ: from the water, you see rock faces and caves; from land, headlands and karst formations.

The Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos

The Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos is a marked circular trail of approximately 10 km between Praia da Marinha and Praia de Vale de Centianes. Information boards and rest areas are part of the route; the rest areas offer views of rocky headlands and various karst formations. One section of the trail runs directly above the skylight of the Benagil cave, between these two beaches. The approximate length refers to the entire circular route, while the location above the skylight refers to one section. Check local trail conditions before setting out. The circular route is not simply a connection between the two beaches.

Getting there and travel planning

To reach Praia de Benagil, it is recommended that you follow the signs to the beach from the EN 125, near the International School of the Algarve. Check the current situation before setting out.

At around 10 km, the circular trail provides a concrete planning estimate; the boat trips follow the coast. You can decide how you would like to explore the coast first, then plan your stay accordingly.
