Altura: Beach, Trails, Water Sports and Festivals
Accommodation in Altura
Altura offers several practical starting points for planning a trip: Praia da Alagoa, trails, water sports and local festivals. Praia da Alagoa, also known as Praia de Altura, is located near Altura. If you’re looking for a hotel, you can first decide whether beach access, a named trail, sporting activities or an event date should be the deciding factor for your stay.
At the beach: access and water sports
Praia de Alagoa/Altura has two car parks and four beach access points; three of them have raised walkways leading down to the sand. For practical purposes, it is useful to distinguish between them: the car parks are for arriving by car, while the access points are for getting to the beach. In addition to the beach access points, the coastal areas bordering the bathing zone offer suitable conditions for windsurfing and kitesurfing.
Passadiço de Altura
The Passadiço de Altura is about 1,500 metres long and 3 metres wide; only the length is explicitly described as approximate. A new section was inaugurated on 21 August 2026, connecting Praia Verde Lago in Altura with Praia Verde. For orientation, you can distinguish the approximate length of the Passadiço from the destinations named for the new section: one figure describes the path, while the other describes its specific connection.
Dune protection
Landscape protection includes the new section of the Estrutura de Salvaguarda do Cordão Dunar, inaugurated in August 2026: it prevents people from trampling the dunes and helps them recover.
Triatlo de Altura
The course described for the 2026 Triatlo de Altura comprises a 750-metre swim at Praia da Alagoa, 20 kilometres of cycling and a 6-kilometre run along several streets in Altura. The swim takes place at Praia da Alagoa, and the run follows several streets; the cycling distance is specified. This makes it possible to distinguish the course by its locations, rather than considering it only as a whole.
Festivals and dates
The date of the “Festas do Imaculado Coração de Maria” is tied to Corpus Christi: they take place in Altura on the second Saturday afterwards. You can work out the exact date for your trip using the Corpus Christi date for the year you want to visit. A specific event date and the programme for an individual edition are two separate planning considerations.
The 2026 edition of the “Festas em Honra do Imaculado Coração de Maria” included a procession through the streets of Altura. The associated Feira de Artesanato showcased regional craft traditions. The 2024 Feira de Artesanato de Altura featured dozens of exhibitors and artisans, as well as live demonstrations; local and regional sweets and specialities were also offered. The recurring festival date is tied to Corpus Christi; the details about the procession, crafts, demonstrations and specialities, by contrast, refer to individual years. So if you’re planning your trip around a particular programme item, treat the festival date and the programme for that edition as separate details.
