Arraiolos brings together a history of textile craftsmanship with architectural and landscape heritage. Castelo de Arraiolos stands on Monte de São Pedro, a regularly conical hill with gentle slopes north of the present-day town. The Tapetes de Arraiolos and the PR1 Entre Pontos e Colinas circular hiking trail add further, quite different facets to the destination. This means you can plan your stay around cultural history and a longer hike as separate highlights.

Carpet Art in Arraiolos

The Tapetes de Arraiolos are crafted by hand in Arraiolos. According to the municipality, production dates back to a time before the 15th century; the oldest mention it cites is from 1598. This places an early history of production alongside a specific written date.

An extraordinary example of the scale of this work is O Maior Tapete de Arraiolos feito em Arraiolos. The carpet measures 120 m² and comprises more than 4.5 million stitches. Local carpet embroiderers stitched it following the example of an Arraiolos embroidery piece from the 17th century, which belongs to the collection of the Museu Nacional Machado de Castro. The work’s size and its historical model offer two different insights into local craftsmanship.

Buildings and Long Periods of History

Castelo de Arraiolos is a national monument. It includes the wall of the former settlement and the Paços dos Alcaides. Its location on the regularly conical Monte de São Pedro places the castle in the landscape north of the present-day town. The history of other monuments also reaches far back: Convento dos Lóios was founded in 1527 and dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Assunção. Igreja do Salvador dates from the 16th century and has paintings.

An even earlier period is associated with Anta da Vila de Arraiolos. It was built between the 4th and 3rd millennia BC on a slope of the Arraiolos hill, facing the basin of the Rio Almançor. The anta has been classified as a national monument since 1910. These dates give the place a long historical span: from a prehistoric monument to medieval castle features and buildings from the 16th century.

Hiking the PR1

The PR1 Entre Pontos e Colinas de Arraiolos is an 8.5 km circular hiking trail, with an approximate duration of two to two and a half hours. The route leads to Barragem da Oleirita and then to the Ecopista, which follows a former railway line. The surfaces change along the way: the trail runs over firm earth, sections of paved road and the Ecopista. Check the route information and trail conditions locally before setting out.

The landscapes along the trail are home to resident birds of prey. These include Águia-d’asa-redonda, Peneireiro-cinzento, Milhafre-real, Milhafre-preto, Águia-cobreira and Águia-calçada. These species describe the birdlife of the area; individual sightings cannot be guaranteed during a visit.

The Square, an Event and a Local Specialty

At Praça do Município, visitors can see a 3D depiction of the square’s historical development from the 13th century to the present day. If you are planning specifically to see this installation, check its availability beforehand. Inaugurated on 23 December 2001, the Monumento à Tapeteira commemorates the historical importance of the craft associated with Arraiolos. A mosaic evokes an Arraiolos carpet; a ceramic panel depicts the work of the carpet embroiderers.

Empada de Arraiolos is also part of the town’s local character: it is considered a valued and much sought-after product with historical and cultural significance. For a broader insight into crafts, gastronomy and other local products, visit O Tapete está na Rua, a cultural initiative held by the municipality in the historic centre. Its programme includes performances, exhibitions, colloquia, debates and a special exhibition of Tapetes de Arraiolos. Individual programme items may vary from one edition to another.

You can choose from a range of highlights when planning your visit: the history and design of the carpets, monuments from several eras, or a circular hike with a stated distance and duration. If you are planning to walk the PR1, use the approximate time estimates as a guide and check trail conditions locally.
