The Guadiana shapes the municipality of Alandroal; the area around the Alqueva reservoirs is also part of its remarkable natural landscape. Historic buildings, a hiking route through the Montado and experiences on the river give your trip a range of different highlights. The night sky is another attraction: Alandroal is one of the municipalities around Lake Alqueva that reduce public lighting to a minimum at night to preserve conditions for stargazing.

Scenery and Hiking near Pedra Alçada

The ADL PR2 – Pedra Alçada is a nine-kilometre hiking route in Santiago Maior. It takes around three hours to walk, and its difficulty is rated as moderate. Check trail conditions and signage before setting off. The route passes through cork oak and holm oak Montado and reaches the Ribeira da Palha, described as having clear water and green banks.

The granite outcrop that gives the route its name, Pedra Alçada, consists of two boulders stacked on top of each other. It is ten metres high and six metres in diameter. The walk therefore combines a distinctive geological feature with the Montado landscape and the stream. This makes it a clearly defined option for your plans: the distance, approximate duration and moderate difficulty are known, while trail conditions and signage should be checked locally.

River Activities and Stargazing

Boat trips, short cruises, sailing, stand-up paddleboarding and fishing are available at Praia Fluvial Azenhas d’El Rei; some activities may vary by season. You can kayak across the Guadiana to the Spanish river bathing area of Cheles, which is 50 metres away. Yoga or Tai Chi sessions are also offered; availability may vary by season. The main difference between these options is whether you want to spend time on the river or take part in a session on the riverbank.

Stargazing is also possible at Praia Fluvial Azenhas d’El Rei. The site is in a Dark Sky Reserve recognised by UNESCO as a Starlight Destination. Stargazing adds a different way to experience the surroundings to the river activities: it is an activity in its own right and does not depend on going hiking. A local restaurant at the beach serves Alentejo dishes made with regional produce; check its opening times and menu in advance.

Castles, Churches and Architectural History

Construction of Castelo de Alandroal began in February 1294 and was completed exactly four years later. The complex is divided into the Kastelejo and the Alcáçova. Inside the castle is the Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, built against the keep. Its architecture combines Manueline, Baroque and Neoclassical elements.

The Igreja Matriz de São Pedro reveals another historical layer: it already existed in 1394, and its main chapel preserves a remnant of the later 16th-century structure. The Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Boa Nova dates from the first half of the 14th century. It is considered a rare medieval fortress-temple building in Portugal. Its Greek cross plan and strongly military architecture make it a distinctive counterpart to the churches within the castle.

In Terena is the Povoado fortificado e Santuário de Endovélico, a classified archaeological sanctuary. Since 31 December 1997, it has been protected by decree as an IIP (Imóvel de Interesse Público). The ruins form a significant sanctuary dedicated to Endovélico and are associated with around 80 Latin inscriptions. The Anta de Santa Luzia, a megalithic tomb, is also located on the Herdade de Santa Luzia.

The architectural history of the Ermida de São Sebastião also spans several phases: it was probably founded in the 16th century, extensively rebuilt in 1722, and significantly remodelled after the 1755 earthquake. In Juromenha, meanwhile, the medieval structure was built using reused Roman and Visigothic building materials. The site is known as the “Guardian of the Guadiana” because it stands on a raised hill above the riverbanks.

Crafts, Music and Cultural Venues

Alandroal’s craftspeople work with basketry, metal, wood, Alentejo painting, marble, textiles and lace; the traditional art of river fishing is also part of local craftsmanship. A village choir in the municipality of Alandroal keeps the Alentejo musical tradition alive. Its songs recall earlier rural traditions, hard agricultural work and forms of folk entertainment.

The Fórum Cultural Transfronteiriço de Alandroal has a 176-seat auditorium, a screening room, a café-concert area and exhibition spaces. Together with the religious buildings and archaeological sites, these offer a variety of cultural interests for your trip: architectural history, crafts, music and archaeological heritage.

Choose the Focus for Your Hotel Search

When searching for hotels in Alandroal, your interests can help you decide: historic buildings and religious architecture offer a different focus from the PR2 hike or river activities at Praia Fluvial Azenhas d’El Rei. If you would also like to take in the night sky, stargazing is another factor to consider when planning your trip.
