Penacova combines windmills and monastic history with a striking landscape along the Mondego. There are also viewpoints, kayaking and a signposted trail network. When looking for a hotel, you can first decide whether to focus your stay on culture, nature or activity.

Rock Formations and River Landscape

The Livraria do Mondego is a natural monument on the banks of the Mondego near Penacova. It was formed over the course of more than 400 million years. The formation consists of Ordovician quartzites, arranged almost vertically near the river. This brings together a long geological history and a striking arrangement of rocks in one place. The Livraria can be seen from the IP3 in the area of the bridge over the Mondego at Penacova and is directly accessible via the Estrada Nacional 2. For orientation, these are two distinct details: visibility from the IP3 and direct access from the national road.

Windmills and Milling History

The Moinhos de Gavinhos comprise 14 windmills. Five of them are in working order. Distinguishing between the total number and those in working order describes the windmill complex more precisely than a single figure. From the mills, the view extends north to the Serra do Bussaco and southwest to the Serra da Aveleira. Here, the history of milling meets views of two mountain ranges in different directions.

The Museu do Moinho Vitorino Nemésio is located in Portela de Oliveira within the Serra do Bussaco forest. It preserves the history of windmills and watermills, as well as the memory of their millers. While the Moinhos de Gavinhos foreground the windmills and their views, the museum focuses on the history of windmills and watermills and the people whose work was connected with them.

Activity on the Mondego

The Centro Trail Running Carlos Sá offers a different focus. It has a network of signposted routes homologated by the Associação de Trail Running Portugal (ATRP). If trail running is one of your travel interests, this network offers a distinct starting point for planning.

In Penacova, you can also kayak down the Mondego. At Praia Fluvial do Reconquinho, a wooden footbridge connects the town to the opposite riverbank; the bridge is also often used for jumping into the water. The river experience thus ranges from kayaking on the Mondego to jumping from the bridge at Reconquinho.

Views in the Vila

Two places in the Vila offer different kinds of views. Mirante Emydio da Silva is at the head of the Vila of Penacova and overlooks the valley. Pérgola Raúl Lino is in the centre of the Vila; its terrace invites you to take in the landscape. The distinction is simple: a view across the valley from the head of the Vila, or a view of the landscape from a terrace in the centre.

Monastery and Manuscripts in Lorvão

In Lorvão, the Centro Interpretativo do Mosteiro de Lorvão presents the “Livro das Aves” and the “Apocalipse do Lorvão” as manuscripts associated with the monastery. The “Apocalipse do Lorvão” is inscribed on UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register. A visitor route through the Mosteiro de Lorvão passes through the Portaria, church and cloister. The manuscripts and the route offer different points of focus: the two named works alongside a path through three specific areas of the monastery.
