Condeixa A Nova offers several distinct themes for a culture-focused stay: the Roman presence in the Terras de Sicó, palace architecture and church construction. When planning, it helps to choose a focus rather than treating all the sights as equivalent stops. You can also work two museums into your daily plans based on their visiting hours, while the historic buildings showcase different periods and developments.

Palaces: construction and change

The Palácio Sotto Mayor dates from the 17th century and was later remodelled during the Pombaline period; it is also classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público. The Palácio dos Figueiredos, also built in the 17th century, is also known as the Paço dos Figueiredos or Paço do Capitão-Mor. The palaces can therefore be distinguished by different points of reference: for Sotto Mayor, the remodelling and classification are defining features, while for Figueiredos, it is the different names by which it is known.

Church architecture from two historical perspectives

Different historical questions come to the fore when it comes to the churches. The Igreja Matriz de Condeixa was built in the 16th century at the behest of D. Manuel I. The Igreja de Santa Cristina replaced an older church on the same site. The distinction lies in their historical points of reference: for the Matriz, the construction period and patron are defining features; for Santa Cristina, the sequence of the older church and its replacement is key. If church architecture is your focus, these differences offer two concrete ways to explore the town's history.

PO.RO.S: Roman presence and visiting hours

The PO.RO.S – Museu Portugal Romano em Sicó presents the Roman presence in the Terras de Sicó and highlights the meeting of cultures that shaped the area's history. The museum is located at Quinta de S. Tomé, Avenida Bombeiros Voluntários de Condeixa-a-Nova 41. It is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00; last admission is at 17:15. If you are planning a visit later in the day, use the last admission time as your guide, not just the closing time. Check the opening hours before your visit.

Casa-Museu and visitor information

The Casa-Museu Fernando Namora opened to the public on 30 June 1990. It can be visited Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 14:00 to 18:00 on a self-guided visit. There is a break between the two time slots; visiting hours may change, so checking before your visit is recommended. Condeixa's tourist information office is located in the Casa dos Arcos.

The difference is clear when choosing a day to visit: PO.RO.S also lists Sunday, while the Casa-Museu's visiting hours are Tuesday to Saturday. At the Casa-Museu, you should also account for the break between 13:00 and 14:00.
