Fishing history, sacred art and coastal landscapes offer different themes to explore on a trip to Tocha. At Praia da Tocha, the traditional Arte-Xávega fishery is still thriving and is one of the area’s main tourist attractions. The Centro de Interpretação de Arte-Xávega, Igreja Paroquial da Tocha and Núcleo Museológico do Hospital Colónia Rovisco Pais offer further cultural perspectives. You can shape your stay around the subjects that interest you, from fishing and church art to the history of the former hospital.

Arte-Xávega and Fishing History

The Centro de Interpretação de Arte-Xávega (CIAX) is a cultural, educational and tourist venue that helps visitors understand the historical, sociocultural and ethnographic dimensions of a traditional fishing activity at Praia da Tocha. Texts, films, photographs and exhibits document the fishery and the boats and nets used in it. Together, these different media explore the practice of Arte-Xávega and its history at Praia da Tocha.

Fishing is not just a subject at CIAX: Arte-Xávega is still thriving at Praia da Tocha. Traces of the former palheiros have also been preserved there. Fishermen used these structures during the summer months to store the equipment they needed for their daily work. The contrast between a living tradition and the surviving traces of past working practices gives the history of fishing a sense of time.

Admission to CIAX is free, but visits must be arranged in advance. Please arrange your visit before you go.

Church Art and Hospital History

The history of Igreja Paroquial da Tocha begins with a small chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Atocha in Madrid. The original hermitage was founded by D. Juan Garcia Bacelar in 1610. Inside, the nave is lined with ten blue-and-white azulejo panels dating to around 1763. The early origins of the hermitage and its later decoration thus represent distinct historical layers. For travellers interested in sacred art, the church brings together a specific founding story and a defining detail of its interior design.

The Núcleo Museológico do Hospital Colónia Rovisco Pais showcases the cultural and scientific heritage of the former Hospital Colónia Rovisco Pais. Objects, photographs and documents tell the story of Portugal’s last leprosy colony. The museum therefore has a different focus from the parish church: here, the history of an institution takes centre stage, while the church offers insights into the development and decoration of a place of worship. Visits to the hospital museum are guided and must be arranged in advance. Please book your visit ahead of time.

Beach, Lagoons and Dune Trail

Tocha’s tourist attractions include an extensive beach area as well as the lagoons of Mata and Teixoeira. The beach area and lagoons offer distinct landscapes alongside the area’s cultural attractions. If you would like to include both nature and fishing history in your travel plans, you can explore these themes separately or combine them.

The Rota das Areias Douradas is a short circular route of about 5.9 km through the dune area of Praia da Tocha. Its loop and focus on the dunes offer a different experience from the lagoons and cultural attractions. The route adds a clearly defined circuit to the area’s landscape highlights, so your trip need not focus solely on the beach and culture.

Praia da Tocha holds the Bandeira das Acessibilidades, recognising good access for visitors with reduced mobility. Check the current beach conditions before your visit if this information is important for your plans.

A June Event

The Marchas Populares at Praia da Tocha take place in honour of S. João on an evening close to 23 June. If you would like to plan your trip around this tradition, check the date for the relevant year in advance. This will help you take the event’s timing into account when planning your trip.
