In Vila Velha De Rodão, natural history and cultural heritage come together in a range of themes: a natural monument, an archaeological site, an exhibition, a walking trail and an account of olive oil production. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, these highlights can help you plan your day. What matters is which activities you want to include and what visiting arrangements apply to them.

Natural Monument and Geology

The Portas de Ródão have been classified as a natural monument since 2009. Their significance includes geological, landscape, archaeological, historical and biological aspects. They therefore encompass more than a single natural feature: landscape and natural and cultural history come together here.

The Rota da Geologia e Arqueologia do Ródão takes visitors on a journey through 500 million years of Earth’s history. Highlights include a viewpoint overlooking the Portas de Ródão. Advance booking is required for this route; individual visits are not possible. Visits are led by specialists from Geopark Naturtejo. As booking and guided-tour arrangements may change, check them before your visit.

A Walking Trail Through the Urban Area

The PR6 – Geologia e Arqueologia Urbanas offers a different perspective. The circular trail starts next to the CIART and runs mostly through the built-up area of Vila Velha de Ródão. Some sections can be walked separately, as they are easily accessible by car. The recommended period for the hike is October to June.

The two routes therefore differ in their focus and planning: the PR6 is a mostly urban circular trail with sections that can be walked separately; the Rota takes visitors through a long span of Earth’s history and is organised as a guided visit that requires booking. This lets you choose the route format that best suits your planned stay.

Archaeology and Cultural Interpretation

The Estação Arqueológica do Enxarrique is an archaeological camp attributed to the Middle Palaeolithic. It is considered one of the most internationally significant archaeological and palaeontological sites. The CIART – Centro de Interpretação de Arte Rupestre do Vale do Tejo – has a different focus: its permanent exhibition interprets the various cultural expressions of the first inhabitants of the Tagus Valley and their development.

When the CIART reopened in October 2025, a new museographic project was presented to the public. This date describes a milestone at that time, not current visiting hours. If you plan to visit the CIART, check the latest opening and visiting arrangements in advance.

The History of Olive Oil and Activities on the Tagus

The display at Lagar de Varas do Cabeço das Pesqueiras covers the stages of olive oil production. These range from primitive methods to mechanical systems; documented historical phases include the use of human and animal power, as well as hydraulic and mechanical processes. The changing methods of production thus become a subject in their own right—a concrete complement to the archaeological and geological themes.

Cais de Vila Velha de Ródão is considered a preferred spot for water sports on the Tagus. Boat trips on the Tagus are also available; their availability may depend on prior arrangements. Water sports at the quay and boat trips on the river are therefore different ways to include the Tagus in your travel plans.
