Idanha-A-Nova combines a long history with cultural heritage and opportunities to enjoy nature. The town lies above the Ponsul River. Its origins are associated with a castle that Gualdim Pais had built in 1187; Idanha-A-Nova developed around this castle. Surviving remains of the medieval town wall also form part of this historic picture. The summit of the castle offers panoramic views. The castle, the remains of the wall and the location above the Ponsul give this destination a clear historical and scenic setting.

Historic buildings and their details

The religious buildings reveal different aspects of their architectural history. The Capela da Misericórdia was built in the 16th century. The Igreja Matriz de Idanha-A-Nova was renovated in the mid-16th century and has three naves. The Torre Sineira, also known as the Torre do Relógio, is said to have been built using stone from the castle. To understand these buildings, it helps to distinguish between their construction dates, later renovation, layout and the reported origin of the building material: they do not tell the same story, but complement the historical perspective with different details.

Crafts and traditional knowledge

The Centro de Artes Tradicionais on Rua de São Pedro is a picturesque complex of three houses. The craft tradition can also be understood through its specific materials and techniques: Adufes are made using sheepskin and a wooden frame, following the traditional knowledge of local craftspeople. The combination of materials and traditional knowledge makes this craft a cultural subject in its own right. The Louceiros district has three large communal kilns for firing pottery, which are in good condition. The kilns complement Adufe-making with another craft focus: firing ceramics.

Cultural heritage and event history

The Centro Cultural Raiano is a specialist, technical and functional reference centre that develops and coordinates the research, preservation and interpretation of cultural heritage. It includes several exhibition halls and an auditorium with around 260 seats. The history of the Feira Raiana can also be placed in its historical context: its first edition took place in Idanha-A-Nova from 12 to 15 May 1994.
