Belmonte is part of the Aldeias Históricas de Portugal network. To the west, the town overlooks almost the entire eastern slope of the Serra da Estrela. Belmonte offers several thematic ways to plan a trip: the history of the Cabral family, the architecture and pilgrimage-route connection of the Igreja de Santiago, olive oil production, and Belmonte Medieval.

History: Castelo de Belmonte and Pedro Álvares Cabral

Castelo de Belmonte became the Cabral family’s residence in 1466. Belmonte is also the birthplace of Pedro Álvares Cabral, who discovered Brazil in 1500. The dates refer to different contexts: 1466 marks the year the castle became a residence; 1500 is part of the historical account of Cabral. For travelers interested in history, these provide two points of reference: the building’s history as a residence and the biography of a notable person born in Belmonte.

Igreja de Santiago: Architecture and Pilgrimage Route

The Igreja de Santiago is a monument with Romanesque features, as well as Gothic and Mannerist elements. Its architecture therefore draws on several styles rather than belonging to just one. Inside the church is a polychrome granite Pietà; polychrome means multicolored. The Igreja also lies on a Portuguese pilgrimage route to Compostela. Here, architecture, a specific work of art and a connection to the pilgrimage route come together.

Olive Oil Production at the Museu do Azeite

The Museu do Azeite introduces visitors to olive oil production techniques and the importance of olive oil to the local economy. The museum thus offers insight both into how it is made and into the product’s economic role. Travelers interested in local production can explore the subject from these two different perspectives.

Belmonte Medieval: Event Format and Dates

During Belmonte Medieval, Belmonte’s historic district becomes an open-air event space. Decorations on the facades are part of the event, and materials from the relevant period are required for street shops and market stalls. There is also a sand arena and four stages, located at the Castelo, Praça Manuelina, Largo de São Pedro and Pelourinho. The event setup also includes specially installed electricity and water supplies. Belmonte Medieval is an annual tradition and has been held more than 15 times. Dates and programs may vary from one edition to another, so check the details for the specific edition if your visit depends on them.
