Mirandela – Culture, Olive Oil and Trails on the Tua
Accommodation in Mirandela
Mirandela lies on the banks of the Tua and combines historic landmarks with museums, hiking trails and regional cuisine. When planning your trip, you can choose different focuses: a walking route, the town’s history, or the culture surrounding olive oil and Alheira. The dates of local festivals may also play a part in choosing when to travel.
Hiking Trails and Landscape Along the Tua
The Trilho do Tua is a 13.3-kilometre linear walking trail from Frechas to Mirandela. It is part of Mirandela’s municipal trail network, which has been approved by the Federação de Campismo e Montanhismo de Portugal. The landscape along the trail includes riverside vegetation, mainly poplars, alders and willows. Away from the watercourse, extensive landscapes of olive trees, cork oaks and pines can be found.
Two other trails offer a comparison in terms of distance: the linear Trilho de Vale de Lobo runs for 8.6 kilometres from Vale de Lobo to Mirandela. The Trilho Entre Rios is 7.3 kilometres long and is a circular route starting and ending at Parque de Campismo Três Rios Maravilha. This gives you two linear routes and one loop to choose from. The Trilho do Tua is the longest of these three trails; Entre Rios is the shortest.
Town History and Museums
Castelo de Mirandela was built at the end of the 13th century on the orders of King D. Dinis, on S. Miguel hill above the river. The surviving remains include Porta de Santo António and several sections of the former town wall. Since 1955, Castelo has been classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público. The walls and gate give the town’s history specific names and places.
Another historic date concerns the Linha do Tua: the section between Foz do Tua and Mirandela stations was inaugurated on 27 September 1887. Museu Armindo Teixeira Lopes, located in the Centro Cultural Municipal, holds an extensive and varied collection of sculptures, paintings, silkscreens and drawings. Ecoteca houses the Porta de Entrada de Mirandela for Parque Regional Natural do Vale do Tua. As an interactive centre for learning and interpretation, it provides information about fauna and flora, as well as natural and cultural heritage.
The history of olive oil production also has its own dedicated attraction. Museu da Oliveira e do Azeite is located in the former premises of Moagem Mirandelense, which are almost a piece of industrial archaeology in themselves. Its main attraction is a more than 100-year-old hydraulic olive press that is still operational. The former mill site and the press thus bring together industrial history and olive oil culture.
Alheira and Festivals Throughout the Year
Alheira de Mirandela is a traditional smoked sausage. Its ingredients include pork and pork fat, poultry meat from chicken and/or turkey, wheat bread, olive oil and lard. It is seasoned with salt, garlic, and sweet and/or hot paprika. If you are interested in regional cuisine, these ingredients provide a specific example of what the product is made from.
Throughout the year, the Municipality of Mirandela holds four food festivals: Festival de Sabores do Azeite Novo, Festival Gastronómico da Alheira de Mirandela, Festival Gastronómico do Cabrito DOP and Festival Gastronómico da Caça. Festival Gastronómico da Alheira takes place in March; participating restaurants offer special menus featuring Alheira. Festas em honra de Nossa Senhora do Amparo take place at the end of July. They include a procession, a parade of lights and a fireworks display. If you want to plan your trip around one of these festivals, check the exact event dates in advance.
Another Travel Consideration
Praia Fluvial do Parque Dr. José Gama is an officially approved bathing area in Mirandela. If you plan to visit, check the current operating conditions beforehand. This lets you take the cultural, hiking and leisure interests mentioned above into account when planning your stay, without limiting your trip to just one focus.
