Culture and history in Mirandela

Castelo de Mirandela was built at the behest of King D. Dinis towards the end of the 13th century and has been classified as an “Imóvel de Interesse Público” (Property of Public Interest) since 1955. The remains visible today include Porta de Santo António, a small section of wall on the adjoining building to the north, and two other visible sections of wall: at the start of Rua do Rosário and at the junction with Rua de S. José, on the site of the former Postigo de S. José.

Another historic site is the Ponte Medieval, also known as Ponte Velha or Ponte de Mirandela. It is a pedestrian bridge over the Rio Tua and an emblematic monument of the city; it was built in the 16th century. The three names refer to the same bridge and can help you find your way when reading descriptions.

The Museu Municipal Armindo Teixeira Lopes opened in 1981 and is housed in the Centro Cultural de Mirandela. The municipal website, updated in 2019, describes its focus as predominantly contemporary Portuguese art, particularly from the 20th century. It lists around 500 works, mainly paintings, prints, drawings and sculptures; photography and medal art are represented to a lesser extent. The castle remains and bridge are thus complemented by a distinct focus on art.

Landscape and trails

At Parque Dr. José Gama, Praia fluvial Arquiteto Albino Mendo stretches for 100 metres along the banks of the Rio Tua. This riverside landscape complements the historic sites with a clearly defined stretch of waterfront.

The PR1 Trilho do Tua is a 13.3 km linear short-distance hiking trail. It starts in the village of Frechas and ends in the city of Mirandela. Since the start and finish are in different places, bear the linear route in mind when planning; no information on walking time or difficulty is provided here.

The Ecoteca incorporates the “Porta de Entrada de Mirandela” (Mirandela Gateway) to the Parque Regional Natural do Vale do Tua. When planning, you can consider a hiking route, a named connection to the nature park, and the riverside landscape as distinct themes.

Regional cuisine and seasonal festivals

The Festival Gastronómico da Alheira IGP takes place in March. Participating restaurants serve Alheira as a starter or main course in special menus. The Festival Gastronómico do Azeite Novo takes place in January: olive oil is showcased on toast, in regional dishes, and in desserts such as olive oil pudding and olive oil ice cream. Check the exact festival dates and participating establishments before travelling.

At the Festival Gastronómico da Caça, several restaurants serve game dishes. Here too, it is worth confirming the dates and participating restaurants in advance. This lets you distinguish the culinary themes of Alheira, new olive oil and game without assuming that all the festivals take place at the same time of year.

Agri-food tourism in Mirandela includes tastings of regional products and olive oil, as well as visits to oil mills and olive groves. The “Mirandela Destino do Azeite” project also makes olive oil a tourist attraction. Check the specific participating establishments and their dates before planning.
