The cultural and historical highlights of Póvoa de Lanhoso include Castro de Lanhoso, Castelo de Lanhoso, filigree and Maria da Fonte. The Trilho dos Moinhos do Pontido adds a hiking element. The themes span a period from prehistoric eras to the far-reaching changes Portugal underwent in the second quarter of the 19th century. This gives you a range of options for planning your visit: settlement history, cultural interpretation, local history and hiking trails.

Castelo de Lanhoso and the Keep

Castelo de Lanhoso is framed by the surrounding valleys. Its keep houses the Núcleo Museológico do Castelo de Lanhoso. Here, the castle’s setting in the landscape meets a museum focus within the building.

Castro de Lanhoso: Eras and Houses

The chronology of Castro de Lanhoso spans the Chalcolithic, Early Bronze Age, Iron Age and Roman era. It therefore stretches from an early prehistoric period through to Roman times. If you want to explore history over longer periods, this range offers a different perspective from focusing on a single era.

In 2001, three structures were built at Castro de Lanhoso to portray, as faithfully as possible, characteristic features of houses in a Castro settlement. Their purpose is to illustrate the settlement architecture not only through chronology, but also through concrete examples of house forms. Visitors can also follow an interpretation trail through the site and learn about Castro culture. It complements the house examples with a cultural interpretation of the site.

Filigree and Maria da Fonte

The Sala de Interpretação da Filigrana is housed within the Casa da Botica building. This space adds a distinct cultural and historical focus alongside Castro culture.

The Centro Interpretativo Maria da Fonte presents the role of Maria da Fonte and Póvoa de Lanhoso in the context of the far-reaching changes Portugal underwent in the second quarter of the 19th century. These included the introduction of liberalism. Póvoa de Lanhoso is considered the birthplace of the revolt and its leading figure, Maria da Fonte. The centre places the local connection to Maria da Fonte within a broader period of Portuguese history. Compared with the chronology of Castro, its focus is on a specific period in the 19th century and the changes associated with it.

Hiking Trails and Mill Heritage

The Trilho dos Moinhos do Pontido is a walking route connecting Parque do Pontido in the Vila de Póvoa de Lanhoso, Castelo de Lanhoso and Carvalho de Calvos. The route includes nine ruined mills that form the mill heritage of Ribeiro do Pontido. It also crosses Via Romana XVII and leads to Castelo de Lanhoso or Carvalho de Calvos. The route thus highlights both the connections between named places and the mills and Roman road.

Another nearby hiking option is PR3 – Ribeiro Queimado. It starts and ends in Aldeia Turística de Carreira in Sobradelo da Goma. Including this route in your plans gives you another named starting and finishing point for a hike in the area.
