Sever do Vouga offers a range of themes to explore when planning a trip: a former railway line, cultural heritage, natural sites and regional cuisine. The Ecopista do Vouga and structures such as the Ponte do Poço de S. Tiago bring the railway’s history into focus. Archaeology and local culture sit alongside the Parque Urbano and the Cascata da Cabreia. A regional dish and an annual blueberry festival are also among the town’s attractions.

Railway history on the Ecopista do Vouga

The Ecopista do Vouga is an approximately 11-kilometre walking and cycling route that follows the former railway line of the Vale do Vouga. Several railway tunnels are also part of the route. Along the trail, its present-day use as a walking and cycling path meets the line’s former function.

The Ponte do Poço de S. Tiago is a structure directly connected to both periods. It was completed in 1913 for the new railway line of the Vale do Vouga and is now used by the Ecopista. For travellers interested in the repurposing of historic railway infrastructure, the bridge and tunnels make history tangible through real structures.

The Gare Paradela also connects with the railway past: the renovated former station building offers Ecopista users a café or bar, an exhibition space and bicycle rental. Alongside the route itself, visitor amenities are therefore part of this theme.

Archaeology and local culture

The Anta da Cerqueira is an approximately 5,000-year-old passage tomb, classified as a monument of public interest. It provides a tangible archaeological landmark in Sever do Vouga. The Museu Municipal takes a broader approach, covering the archaeology of Terras de Sever, industrial and mining heritage, as well as local ethnography and cultural practices.

The museum’s themes also include Sever do Vouga’s natural wonders and the heritage of small-fruit cultivation, especially blueberries. The archaeological site and the museum thus offer different perspectives: one focuses on a single prehistoric tomb, while the other covers several historical and cultural themes.

Parque Urbano and Cascata da Cabreia

The Parque Urbano de Sever do Vouga is located in the town centre and covers 37,483 square metres. The park’s facilities include the town library, a sports ground, the Museu Municipal, a gerontological park, a blueberry experimental plot and a section of the riverside promenade. The different areas bring together sporting, cultural and landscape features in one centrally located place.

A different natural attraction is the Cascata da Cabreia in Silva Escura, Sever do Vouga. The waterfall is approximately 25 metres high, and the site includes watermills and a picnic area. The Cascata da Cabreia is also a pleasant place for swimming. The waterfall, mills and picnic area each give the site its own connection to nature and to how the area is used.

Regional cuisine and the blueberry festival

Roast veal Sever-style with oven-baked rice is considered a regional dish of Sever do Vouga. The Feira Nacional do Mirtilo takes place every year in June. Blueberries are therefore featured both in the Museu Municipal’s account of local heritage and in the events calendar. If you want to plan your trip around the Feira, check the exact event dates when making your plans.
