Discover Cedrim: Culture, Railway Heritage and Trails
Accommodation in Cedrim
Discover Cedrim through its religious buildings, traces of the railway and trails. Specific landmarks help with orientation: Largo do Chafariz is the start and finish of the PR4 â Encosta do CastĂȘlo; the Ecopista do Vouga runs along the former Vale do Vouga railway line. Other highlights include Monte do CastĂȘlo with its viewpoint, and local heritage such as chapels, mills and espigueiros.
Churches, Chapels and Local Heritage
The Igreja Paroquial de Cedrim is considered one of the finest examples of vernacular Baroque architecture in the municipality of Sever do Vouga. Its façade features a cross with foliate terminals and a niche containing a sculpture of Saint John. These specific features on the building illustrate its traditional architectural classification.
The chapels also reflect different periods: the Capela de Nossa Senhora dos Milagres bears the date 1692, while the Capela de Santo Amaro is a 17th-century building. The Cruzeiro FontanĂĄrio, made from local granite, also stands in Largo do Chafariz. Visitors are recommended to see the Moinho Geraldo mill, which is estimated to be around 700 years old.
Another form of local tradition is the legend of the Mouras. It tells that the Moors settled at Cabeço das Mouras and had an underground passage there, linking CastĂȘlo to the Rio Vouga. They supposedly used this passage to take their horses to drink. The story is part of local folklore and should be distinguished from the archaeological information about Monte do CastĂȘlo.
Monte do CastĂȘlo: History and Views
Monte do CastĂȘlo was a small fortified settlement dating from the Late Bronze Age. It is also a natural viewpoint at an elevation of 512 metres. From here, visitors can enjoy views over the MĂ©dio Vouga valley and the parishes of Sever do Vouga and Pessegueiro do Vouga. The hill is also considered a site of high geomorphological interest, with a wide field of vision. Those interested in Cedrimâs landscape and early settlement will find two different perspectives on the same named place here.
Railway Heritage and Ecopista
At the beginning of the 20th century, the Vale do Vouga railway line led to the construction of a halt in Cedrim. The building and façade of the former goods shed have been preserved at Apeadeiro de Cedrim. A section of the former railway line has also been preserved there as a monument. Railway history is therefore more than just a historical subject: it also shapes the description of the Ecopista do Vouga, an approximately 11-kilometre walking and cycling path along the former railway line.
You can take a short break at the former Apeadeiro de Cedrim while following the Ecopista. The PR4 â Encosta do CastĂȘlo offers a different kind of route: it starts and ends at Largo do Chafariz and follows old paths connecting villages. At Largo das Eiras, which lies along the PR4, there is a group of 11 espigueiros. A route along a former railway line and another along old village connections thus offer two different ways to find your way around.
Before Walking the PR4
The municipality notes that its walking trails are currently undergoing maintenance and reorganisation, and that restrictions or changes may apply. Therefore, check for up-to-date information before walking the PR4. This will help you plan your route based on confirmed conditions, without treating the documented start and finish points as a guarantee of the routeâs current condition.
