Oliveira Do Bairro: Radio, Culture and Bairrada
Accommodation in Oliveira Do Bairro
Oliveira Do Bairro brings together a museum dedicated exclusively to radio, historic industrial architecture and the culinary tradition of Bairrada. The town is part of the Bairrada region and the Rota da Bairrada. This gives you different ways to shape your trip: cultural history, regional cuisine and nature watching.
Museums of radio and music
Radiolândia – Museu do Rádio is the only Portuguese museum dedicated exclusively to radio. It is based on Manuel Silva’s private collection, which includes some of the rarest and most significant radios of the 20th century. The museum has an accessible visitor route with ramps, adapted toilets and a lift. Check the latest accessibility information before your trip.
The Museu de Etnomúsica da Bairrada focuses on another area of cultural heritage. Its collections include musical instruments, handwritten documents, image recordings, oral history accounts from eyewitnesses, textiles, and sound recording, playback, broadcasting and audio equipment. The collection brings together musical objects, oral traditions and the media used to record and transmit sounds. The museum researches and preserves the musical heritage created and lived by the Bairrada community over generations.
Guided visits to the Museu de Etnomúsica da Bairrada are available on request. If you are planning a visit, confirm the current arrangements in advance.
Industrial architecture and religious heritage
The historic Cerâmica Rocha building is a significant example of early 20th-century industrial architecture in the Bairrada region. It was built in 1902 entirely from solid red clay bricks.
The area’s religious history includes places with different origins and uses: the Igreja Matriz da Mamarrosa dates from the 17th century. The Museu de Arte Sacra de S. Pedro da Palhaça is housed in the former Igreja de S. Pedro da Palhaça.
Agricultural processing is also part of local history. Some processing facilities remain in this predominantly agricultural area. These include watermills used to grind grain into flour and olive mills where olives are processed into olive oil.
Bairrada cuisine and wine
Oliveira Do Bairro is associated with the culinary tradition of Bairrada. Regional dishes include Leitão à Bairrada, Cabidela, Feijoada de Leitão, Chanfana and Rojões à moda da Bairrada. The area is also part of a wine region associated with Bairrada wine and sparkling wines.
At Espaço Bairrada, visitors can taste and buy wines, local crafts and regional products. Visits to the region’s cellars and wineries can also be arranged there. Check the current arrangements in advance if you plan to take advantage of these offers.
