Discover Castelo De Paiva
Accommodation in Castelo De Paiva
Castelo De Paiva can be discovered through a range of different attractions: the confluence of the Douro and Paiva rivers, routes tracing the area’s mining history, historic churches and a hilly landscape shaped by vineyards. As you plan your trip, first consider which themes you would like to spend time exploring: hiking trails, river landscapes, or architectural and cultural history. The places and experiences below offer some concrete starting points.
Hiking trails and traces of mining
The Trilho do Mineiro is a circular hiking trail through the entire Couto Mineiro do Pejão, which includes Paraíso, Raiva and Pedorido. Its route follows former miners’ footpaths and, in some sections, the former mining railway lines. Along the way, the landscape meets traces of mining history; the old paths and railway lines retain their historical significance.
The railway bridge in Pedorido also tells the story of this era. The Ponte do Caminho de Ferro de Pedorido was built in 1893 by Empresa Industrial Portuguesa as a narrow-gauge railway bridge and served as a crossing for the locomotives of the Couto Mineiro do Pejão mining railway. The Trilho do Mineiro and the bridge thus offer two different ways to explore the history of mining: on foot along former paths and through a structure from the railway of that era.
Viver o Douro is part of the Viver o Payva D’Ouro project. Its five routes cover important themes in the municipality: the Douro, Paiva, fossils and mining, mountains, and vineyards. PayváPé, meanwhile, is a network of hiking trails that lets you explore the entire municipality of Castelo de Paiva on foot. One specific route option is the Rota Pedestre das Origens de Santo António: it is 5.9 kilometres long, linear and starts at Parque das Tílias. Check trail conditions before setting off.
Rivers, viewpoints and vineyards
Ilha dos Amores, also known as Ilha do Castelo, lies where the Paiva and Douro rivers meet. The structure of a former 15th-century chapel was discovered at the Ilha do Castelo site. Another confluence defines Choupal das Concas, where the Arda flows into the Douro. There is a small sandy beach by the river; the area is suitable for water sports and sport fishing.
If you would like to view the rivers from above, Miradouro de Catapeixe has a stone viewing balcony at the roadside overlooking the Douro and Paiva. Monte de São Domingos is a natural viewpoint surrounded by deep valleys and the Arda and Douro rivers. There are also tables, benches, lawns and shaded areas with trees, used for picnics and social gatherings. Área de Lazer de São Martinho has natural grass and trees whose shade is ideal for resting and reading.
Midões offers a different perspective on the landscape: it lies on a hillside, and numerous vines grown using the traditional vinha de enforcado method shape the scenery. In Gondarém, a group of schist houses stands out; the area is well suited to walks. Together, these places show the different ways to experience the rural side of Castelo De Paiva.
Historic places and culture
In Sobrado’s historic centre, centuries-old buildings of architectural and cultural interest line the streets. These include Paços do Concelho, Igreja Matriz, Chafariz and Edifício da Cadeia. The latter was built in the early years of the 18th century on the orders of Casa de Bragança. Marmoiral de Sobrado, by contrast, dates to the mid-13th century.
Another striking church complex stands in Real. Built in 1737, it is considered one of the oldest churches in the municipality. In addition to its Baroque character and valuable paintings, it has six stone sculptures depicting saintly apostles, which stand in the churchyard. At Anjo de Portugal, a memorial honours the victims of the 2001 accident. A staircase leads to a small chapel there and continues down to the riverbank.
The annual Feira do Vinho Verde, do Lavrador, Gastronomia e Artesanato is another event to consider when planning your trip. It takes place on the first weekend of July; check the exact event dates before travelling.
Getting there and practical information
From Porto, drivers can take the A32 via Canedo, then continue to Castelo de Paiva on the EN222. From northern Portugal, the A3 or A4 routes pass through Penafiel and Entre-os-Rios. As road conditions and routes can change, it is advisable to check the route before setting off.
In Pedorido, the Núcleo de Experiencias Turísticas do Couto Mineiro do Pejão is located in Parque de Lazer do Choupal. When it opened on 8 May 2022, it presented objects from the professional and personal lives of Pejão’s miners, as well as a 3D virtual reality journey into a mine. This offers another vivid perspective on mining history, alongside the former paths and railway bridge.
