Route and mining heritage

The Trilho do Mineiro is a circular route through the entire Couto Mineiro do Pejão in Paraíso, Raiva and Pedorido. The route description therefore extends beyond a single place and covers the mining area across three named localities. Numerous remains of the former coal-mining industry can be seen in the Pejão area of the União de Freguesias de Raiva, Pedorido e Paraíso. The mining heritage includes mines, tunnels and the areas outside the mines. If you are interested in industrial culture, both the circular route and these traces of the past are specific topics to consider when planning your trip.

Sacred buildings and their history

The Capela de Santa Eufémia is a Baroque chapel on a green hillside. It has a rectangular longitudinal floor plan and a single-nave interior; the complex also includes a main chapel and a sacristy. These terms describe different aspects of the building: the floor plan refers to its elongated shape, while “single-nave” describes the layout of the interior. This makes it possible to understand the chapel not only through its Baroque style but also through its spatial arrangement.

The Igreja de São Pedro do Paraíso is documented as early as 1024 and was later rebuilt in the 18th and 19th centuries. Keep these periods distinct: 1024 marks the early documentation, while the 18th and 19th centuries refer to later phases of rebuilding. Both an early historical reference point and the later construction phases are therefore relevant to understanding the site.

Megalithic center and landscape

The Carvalho Mau Megalithic Center comprises three mamoas, which point to the presence of different population groups in the region. One mamoa is about ten meters in diameter. This approximate measurement indicates the size of a single burial mound; the three mamoas also provide an archaeological link to the region’s settlement history.

Across the wider landscape of the União de Freguesias de Raiva, Pedorido e Paraíso, the scenery is shaped by highly varied terrain, limited agricultural use, extensive forest areas and small, dispersed settlements. This broader perspective complements individual buildings and archaeological remains with information about the landscape and settlement pattern of the entire União.

Regional cuisine and production

Regional cuisine features on the menu at Casa do Talho. One of its dishes is Bife à Santa Eufémia, made with Arouquesa veal, onions, oil, red Vinho Verde and salt. Flor do Paraíso restaurant also serves Bife à Santa Eufémia, here made with Arouquesa beef and accompanied by regional Vinho Verde. Both dishes share the same name; the descriptions differ mainly in the type of meat and the stated wine accompaniment.

Quinta da Corga da Chã has been run by the same family for three generations. It covers about 40 hectares, of which five hectares are used exclusively for growing grapes. The total area and the portion specifically used for grapes are two different figures; together with the family’s stewardship, they offer a concrete insight into the operation.

Pilgrimage to Santa Eufémia

The pilgrimage in honor of Santa Eufémia in S. Pedro do Paraíso is a traditional celebration that has been passed down for many decades. If the pilgrimage is important to your trip planning, check the date in advance. This lets you take the celebration into account without assuming a specific current event date.
