Ostróda is located where the Drwęca River flows into Lake Drwęckie. When planning a stay, the town offers several different points of interest: a museum in a former Teutonic castle, a viewpoint in the tower of the Evangelical Church, a modern amphitheater, a cycling route and the Elbląg Canal. This lets you include local history, views and outdoor activities in your trip and prioritize them according to your interests. Transport connections in the wider Ostródzki destination are also relevant for getting there: major routes between Poznań and Olsztyn, and between Warsaw and Gdańsk, intersect in Ostróda. These include the S7 and national roads 15 and 16, and there are also rail connections.

Castle Museum and Local History

The museum in Ostróda is housed in a former Teutonic castle dating from the 14th century and has three exhibition rooms there. The permanent exhibitions are on the ground floor, where rib vaults reflect the castle’s Gothic style. A rib vault is a ceiling structure in which ribs intersect; in Ostróda, you can see this Gothic feature directly in the castle’s architecture. The permanent exhibition “From the History of Ostróda and Its Surroundings” connects the town’s history with that of the surrounding area. Visitors can also explore a gallery and the museum’s exhibition rooms in the castle. “Napoleon in Ostróda” focuses on a more specific subject: an interactive map traces the emperor’s route and identifies key battle sites and headquarters. This brings a broad local theme and a specific route with its historical sites together.

Views and Culture

The viewpoint in the tower of the Evangelical Church is reached by climbing 105 steps. Visitors can see the clock mechanism and three large bells there; the largest has a diameter of 148 cm. From the tower, the view extends across the entire town. If you’d like to combine a view of the town with a closer look at details inside the church tower, this viewpoint offers both.

The modern amphitheater in Ostróda opened in 2012 and has room for 2,500 people. In the wider Ostródzki destination, it is used for music concerts, theater performances, cabaret and other large-scale events. Unlike the exhibitions in the castle, the amphitheater is a venue for events among Ostróda’s cultural offerings.

Cycling Route and Elbląg Canal

The 22 km cycling route runs from Ostróda through Lichtajny, Brzydowo, Ornowo and Kajkowo and back to Ostróda. Returning to the starting point makes it a circular route; the four stops along the way show where it passes. Its distance and sequence of places give you a specific framework for including the ride in your day’s plans. Boat trips are one way to explore the Elbląg Canal between Ostróda and Elbląg. The cycling route is clearly defined as a circular ride with a stated distance, while the canal is the focus of the boat trips.
